Rob,
I am almost certain that I will be riding the 350 and starting at 7am on Friday. Let's just plan on all thru riders meeting then. Stage racers can meet ride out as they see fit. This will fix the intention dilemma mentioned above.

I'm giving pretty serious thought to a single push effort on the 250. I have some ideas that need real world testing.

Contrived Bikepack Racing dot com  la

icon_biggrin  Ha ha.  Well, all bike racing is an exercise in contrivance.  Otherwise it's called riding, eh?

Better snag that domain name while it's still available...

Hmmmmm interesting. Care to elaborate? I assume that means you have tested them up in your Boulder Labratory?

Previously, I mentioned that the 350 version would only be on a exploratory mission only. I plan on using the known track instead of incorporating some unknown singletrack that was on the recon to-do list. Therefore, if anyone plans on racing it, I encourage you to do so. I'd hate to be the only one heading to the Grand Canyon that weekend.

The goal being to have two different races next year, a 350 thru race and a 250 stage race, with some overlapping of intentions (meaning that 250 thru racers are allowed, etc). This is just our vision and is of course, open to suggestions.

The 350 is a known good route (for lack of better wording)? My ability to commit to a shorter or longer race may totally be based on who I end up traveling out there with. Are the 350 details out on the webpage accurate?

I can appreciate the fun of having two races but another part of me thinks that one route may end up winning out in the end?

Either way I'm laying in bed all day sick right now which is a bummer...

The GPX file is available on the AES Coconino 250/350 website. http://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/5-coconino-250-and-350/

There is a strong possibility that it will change in a few areas (very minor changes), but you can still use the GPX that is up now to plan your race.

Per our scouting this weekend, we've added more singletrack to the route, replacing roads.  Look in the same place on the AES site for CLR09_v2.gpx.

The areas that changed were Sedona from Oak Creek to Lime Kiln trail and Wing Mountain, west of Flagstaff.

The loop is shaping up nicely with mucho 1-track.

I put up a Coconino page on bp.net, just general route description and some links to the AES site:

http://www.bikepacking.net/routes/coconino-loop/

Also I split the GPS track by singletrack/road and there's over 100 miles of singletrack on the route.  44% singletrack, actually.

AZ Cold = Good

I am a little concerned about my reliance on my GPS unit for this one. Not that I don't think my GPS is 100% reliable Wink and that I will never go over my bars and smash it...any chance a cue sheet will be available. Long shot I know, just asking.

Looking over the course I was wondering how many Jpegs it would take to (at the map level that I can see with out reading glasses) cover the whole course, and then how much would it cost at a copy place to print it all out.

I think it would be more cost effective to use a copy store rather then print at home but it does look like it would be possible follow the course with out a GPS if you had all of the maps. Also my Prescott FS map shows a lot of it as well though not at a very good scale and not all on one map part of the course must be on a Flagstaff FS map I don't have yet.

A cue sheet will be available. I would hate to soley depend on a GPS to make this thing happen, especially for those that do not have one. I think we have three people that might not be using a GPS to ride the route.

I like the idea of the maps too. I'd suggest using Topofusion + GPX to print some of the trouble spots.

Chad do you know the mileage and elevation gain of the 350 vs the 250? I saw 235/28k for one of them.

For Trans Utah I will rely mainly on my gps.  I also have a laminated profile for my gas tank bag so that I can see the next major ascent/descent and resupply spots.  For a backup I took about a dozen pictures of the route in topofusion - just pointed the camera at the computer screen, snap pic, reposition map and repeat.  So now my backup maps are on my camera.  I also have an extra battery for my camera.
Best wishes to all you racers/riders. Wish I could could join but I gots plans with the family that weekend.

The track is traced into the section from Sycamore Rim up to the Grand View, so I am not 100% sure. Thereafter, we know the route on the AZT back to Flagstaff. I would estimate 345/37k. I will let you know tonight when I look at the track again.

great idea!
