I met Michelle a few miles before molas pass yesterday, huge props to her for pushing on!! Tons of respect for the courage that takes. It's been dumping buckets for over 24 hours now in the silverton area. Much needed moisture but hoping it ends soon. Things are pretty soggy around here...

Forums / Classifieds / New Production Framebag: Upski

Upski.com is now making a production framebag. It's a little different than typical framebags as it has a rolltop closure similar to a drybag. Easy to get into and use as it opens from the top and opens wide. Handmade by my friend Kevin in Carbondale, Colorado. He also makes kick ass upskis for wind ski mountaineering.

I'm interested in the trail discovery part (though an online topo fusion lite, perhaps like bikehike.co.uk but with more maps would be really nice). Redtrails.com was a great resource for usfs gpx files and trails, i'm super bummed it's gone. Something like skidmap.com could be cool. It needs to be wiki style so peolpe can add to/edit the database. Not all that interested in the social part, but that could help set it apart.

Love my camelbak octane. Expandable size and most of the volume sits low and around waist, somewhat similar to the wingnut design (which I'd like to try). Belt pockets are nice too.

Roger, Roger. Not nearly as thought out and dialed as some of the sweet set ups above. Ergon grips- love the bar ends, I live in them as much as possible. Narrowish bar for fitting between tight trees Garmin Legend Etrex GPS mounted to stem via the Chunt method: http://www.bikepacking.net/individual_setups/chunts-bikepacking-setup/Bolder Bikepacking ( http://bolderbikepacking.wordpress.com/) harness and pocket. Harness holds either a 10 or 13 liter drybag with sleeping bags for the wife and I and tent, plus poles. Pocket holds maps, compass, and odds and ends. Revelate Gas tank for snacks I'd like to try out a king cage water bottle mounted on the stem, but then I'll need to figure something else out for the gps. Also considering a swept bar, and would love to find a fold up map case solution like shown above. That said, it's nice to not have toooooo much stuff on the front end. Keeps the steering nice and doesn't clutter up the view.

We went in late June- which worked out well as there were less 'crowds' than there might be during the July and August holidays (hard to imagine it ever getting crowded, it was so vast and empty). Also, later in the summer I hear the midges might get worse. They weren't much of a problem on our trip as long as we didn't stop in or near the woods. They weren't fast enough to keep up with a biker and we could stop for 5 minutes or so before they'd find us. The west coast was worse for midges, but best for scenery. All that said, next time I'd like to go in August when the heather is in bloom. It was just starting to bud at the end of our trip.

We'd planned on spending a day at the Wolftrax trails outside Laggan on our day off in Newtonmoore, but decided to take a day off the saddle and do some hiking instead. We took 9 days in an effort to give us lots of time to stop and check things out and keep it casual. Could be done in 5 days, but wouldn't have been as much fun for us.

Forums / Question and Answer / Fuel storage in bike
|
on: March 01, 2013, 07:02:03 AM

I've heard of people with custom frame setups that allow them to store liquid (fuel) in their bike frame (Mike C's Iditarod bike, among others). A neat idea I'd like to see/hear more about. Then I saw this coming from King Cage on bikerumor's site: The $200 titanium 'Whiskey Bar.' Guessing one could use it for fuel storage- and no custom fabrication needed. Seems like it might be a bit of a pain in actual use, but would certainly free up some space. Anyone doing this currently with custom bars? Any thoughts?

I did this to an LX crankset- essentially the same. I found a file to work best. The metal is pretty soft so it goes quick and easy. Put the chain on there and mark where you need to file (don't forget to file the bolt heads too). Try it out after filing some and see if you've taken off enough or not. This was a very worthwhile mod, I love the lower gear.
