Without giving up too many secrets,  I would love to see photos (or links to) of decked out-with-packs winter rigs.
Thanks! JK

My rig from the '07 Arrowhead.

Almost identical to my '06 rig, but with slightly larger tires and thermoses instead of a Camelbak.  It was a tough year though and I wasn't tough enough.

are those kenda nevegals? 2.2?
how did they do in the snow?
i tried mine on the beach yesterday. good fun.
tough going in the loose stuff - but decent on the firm area near the waterline.

Those are indeed Nevegals, but, believe it or not, they are 2.7".  They were pigs.  Great grip on the hills, but heavy and ridiculous rolling resistance.  There is a good reason that the Endomorphs have a low profile tread.  In the soft stuff big, tall knobs can really slow you down.

Thanks Andrew.  I had a good day at GRAID.  Your brother and Cory are both monsters for riding the whole 240 miles on mountain bikes.

On topic I just did a two day gravel tour with the new Pugsley.  I didn't have a camera with me, but I'll try and get some photos of the rig.

I managed to toss this thing together out of parts left at my parents house while home for the Holidays.  It's a bit of a cobbled together jalopy, but the parts in and of themselves are functioning and some are even nice.  I live in California now and wanted to have a bike to ride on the seemingly endless miles of snow machine trails up in Northern MI for a couple weeks while I'm in town.  It's just a Surly 1x1 with no offset Large Marge rims and some ridiculous downhill tires.  I'll probably take some static for only having a front brake, but I had to cut the brake posts off to get the rims into the frame and the frame is pre-disc tab vintage....  I mean really, the thing seems to stop quite safely at the speeds I'm traveling at through the snow.  The One F*cking Speed sticker may seem out of place on a now geared bike, but while it may have a nine speed cassette I assure you all, with those tires it still has only one speed... slow.

Paul and others,

Nice looking rigs.  I'll have to get some pics of mine.  How do you like the powerstraps?  I'm on the fence about them.  The rides I did with them I spent more time trying to get into them and tipping over.  I may have to try again.

J-No, I've been using powerstraps on my bikes for a long time and it seems like I'm always putting them on and taking them off.  I've always thought that they were really cumbersome to use but for some reason whenever I'm doing a ride and I don't want to run clipless I'll sometimes toss them on.  I suppose it's sort of stating the obvious to say that they are somewhere between just riding platform pedals and clipless pedals but for some reason I can't help but feel like, while that's pretty obvious, there is still a great deal of nuance in there.  For me, it's just a question of whether or not I want to mess around with them.  I've always felt they were great for winter use because I've never owned fancy clipless boots, and they let me get that extra grip and security of contact with the pedals while still using giant pac-boots. When you get down to that part of the business, they're hard to beat, but when it's nice outside I usually tend to either just go full clipless or just ride the platforms depending on what sort of riding I'll be doing/what else I'll be doing in the middle of my ride (i.e. setting up a tent and camping, making up a brew, trail maint., whatever).  My 2 cents....

Not ridden the powerstraps yet... bought them just so i could have the option of using them.. now thinking i will try and use my spd pedals or just flats and fox boots...

Got a trip to Ecrins in France soon to test sleeping bag etc so i'll decide after that.

This was my rig for the 2006 Sustina 100. It's a 2002 or 2003 Gary Fisher Sugar with standard rims and 2.1" Kenda studded tires. The thing stuffed in the triangle is a Bell handlebar bag strapped to the rear shock. It was chock full of Power Bars and chemical warmers ready to be activated for purposes of thawing. Strapped to the handlebars is an old sleeping bag sack stuffed with random things I don't remember. The back rack is a very cheap REI seatpost rack with a lightweight drybag full of one of those -20 synthetic sleeping bags you can get for $60 on eBay, a thermarest, and a whole lot of down and wool clothing that did me a whole lot of no good when it was 37 degrees and raining overnight.

Yes, some of us were very knowledgeable when we entered this sport.

My winter rig for commuting here in Fairbanks.  Nothing too special, SnoCat rims with Panaracer Rampages.  1X8 setup, with extra shifter on the left to balance out the grip on the bars.  Great grip with the extra wide tread.  Can't imagine what the snowbike tires on Large Marge's are like...

On the subject of straps: I bought a pair of these Hold Fast straps for the sole purpose of winter riding. Originally designed for freestyle fixed gear, they work great because they go on large platform BMX pedals and are about 100-times the quality of the Powergrips. They hold your foot extremely well and are easily adjustable. Plus, made in NYC and available in pretty colors!

Those look ALOT tougher than powergrips to get a foot out of quickly for dabbing in sketchy snow conditions....
