Wunderground is saying high 70's daytime, low 60's at night, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms in Clayton, GA (just a few miles from the start) for Saturday. Projected mountain forecast calls for similar conditions all week.

Before you judge a man, try walking a mile in his shoes. That way when you do judge him you'll be a mile away and have his shoes.

Got a question for anyone who's done this route.  Would the weather allow this to be done in January/February? It'll be cold, especially at night. But I'm not sure how the route will be that time of the year. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

post your question on the trans north georgia facebook page if you don't get response here or contact David Muse or Eddie O'Dea directly via facebook.  It would be very cold at the higher elevations and snow unpredictable.

Not sure when hunting season is, but factor that into your decision.

I would say the only difference would be dealing with the cold and possibility of snow.  If your planning to move quickly though then you could probably plan around a good weather window.  It might actually be beneficial to be riding in colder weather instead of dealing with 85-95 degree weather which is not uncommon during August!  Good luck! thumbsup

Thanks. Hunting Season is definitely something to think about. I'll look that up. We'll be driving over from Beaufort SC.  I don't mind a little cold but wasn't sure how the trails might be affected or how much snow, if any, to expect.

Winter in GA is a mixed bag lately. It could be cold, windy and raining, sunny and 65 degrees or sleeting and snowing especially the closer you get to spring when the lingering Canada cold fronts hit the rain storms. My experience with snow in the Georgia has been in March or April believe it or not. One other thing to consider is Jan/Feb are going to have fairly short riding times if you're only traveling by daylight on the route. I ran into that last December on a solo bikepacking trip in north Georgia. The night seemed like forever after 5PM and I was ready to get riding by 3AM, because I sacked out at dark. It was nice and bug-less (mostly) though, except for those gnats who live in freezing temps. Another thing to keep an eye on if the weather turns bad is whether the counties have closed certain paved gaps on the route. Hogpen (Richard B Russell Scenic Hwy) would be one they would close if it gets icy or snowy on the roads. Wolfpen on hwy 180 would probably be another they'd close.

man it was cold in August at times - I got chilled to the core one night and couldn't warm up - I'm trying to think if the winter months would be worse or better (ha)
