Apologies if this is a little off-topic as most of you seem to be talking racing, but for a wannabe GDMBR tourer someday (targeting 2019 once the littles are a bit older), what percentage of the route would you consider unrideable on 700Cx35 tires? Believe my existing forks can accommodate up to 42-45mm width somewhere in there.

Basically, I'm a flatlander, and haven't any issues on the local singletrack or gravel climbs, but again I'm out in the bald-ass prairie so needs are a little different here. I'd prefer not to have to drop too much $$$ on any expensive upgrades to make the route rideable, but at the same time would hate to get out there on my current setup and end up walking half the distance because I wasn't prepared.

yeah I wish I could clear wider than 2.1 comfortably.  The Ikons look great but I would have to run 2.0s (no 2.1 available in 27.5).

I rode with Schwalbe ThunderBurt 27.5 x 2.1 TL Snakeskin. Very similar to the high rated Nanos tread pattern. Fast rolling at 480g and decent cornering knobs. No flats but noticeable punctures that sealed in the NM desert. In Steamboat Springs I swapped to Ardent Race 2.2 120tpi EXO 3C TR. Clearance was very tight but I didn't have any more mud from that point. The swap was not due to the tire wearing out, but that's another story.

Post ride impressions were that a 29" would be a better choice, 2.4 is ideal.

Hello

Planning to start the great divide from banff in a couple of days.

Currently have Schwalbe nobbly nic 29ers.

What do you think about their suitability for the divide?

Worth changing to something else?

Thanks a lot

Dry conditions.
I'd go for Panaracer Gravel kings SK 700 x 43c, which come out as 45mm. Very fast efficient tyre.

If it were going to rain for days and i hit mud for a few days, i'd carry Schwalbe Thunderburt 29 x 2.1.

This would save a lot of energy, i haven't done the great divide, but most of it looks dry.

Yes, this. I'm hypothesizing the Pana GraveKing SK would be a fine tire choice in 43mm (surely when dry). They are tough as nails from what I've read and the tread pattern is fast. Also tubeless. I'm building up a pair of NOBL CX28's for my 2017 Fargo and going for as fast a tire as possible without sacrificing too much cush. Curious if anyone else has thoughts.

IMO, unless you are among the hardest of the hardmen, you will want (maybe eventually beg for) a tire larger than that.  Air volume is everything.  More doesn't necessarily mean slower, but it does mean more relief for your aching body.

Agreed. These require much testing. I ride a few long gravel events each year and these were what I had these tires in mind for. Ill do loaded trips as well. Can always put some 2”+ tires on

In 2016 I rode the TD from Banff to Whitefish on WTB 2.1 Nanos. They were always my go to tire. In 2017, I tried out Vittoria Mexcal 2.25 tires. I will never not use Mezcals. They gripped like nothing I've ever ridden in that style of tire.

I'm doing the GDMBR South- North, starting early June, with surly Knards, 29  x 3, 33 tpi. Tube or tubeless (this would be a first for me)? Your thoughts appreciated!

+1 on the Mezcal.

I used a single set of Mezcal 29 x 2.25 tubeless in TD17. Pics are from shortly after my finish. The rear wore down more than the front. I couldn't even find any sealant leaking through. These were the G+ version which I'd recommend. The regular version is more supple than the G+ and feels more like Nano's. They aren't invincible though. A friend of mine sliced a sidewall on a G+ Mezcal. We sewed it up and he rode it for another 50 miles or so. I've also used Nanos, Thunder Burt and Sparwoods. I like all of them but the Mezcals have lasted the longest.
