Speaking of weather, here's a heads-up for SOBOs.  It seems to be true that the Monsoon is stirring earlier than usual down in New Mexico.  Here in Silver City we've had rain up in the Gila NF for the last four days from that inflow.  Nothing too heavy yet, but the weather pattern has started to slip into place already.  It's supposed to ease up a little bit early in the coming week, then the monsoon flow starts up again at the end of next week.  This usually doesn't click in until around/after July 1 so it's a couple of weeks early.  It may sputter on/off for a little while too but usually, once it's on, it's on.

Good race in the singlespeed category between Seth & Andrew.

Sofiane is about to get his obigatory Ovando photo, then perhaps a bit of sleep in Lincoln. I believe that was his plan.

I did notice quite a few riders shortcut the route either after Round Prairie or Fernie, conditions are tough based on the pics I've been seeing. Adds to the adventure, right?

Rode up to the snow line today- about a mile and a half above the outlet of upper whitefish lake. What a surprisingly gorgeous day. Saw probably a dozen tour riders and maybe 10 day riders- more than i have ever seen on that road.
I'm a bit worried about the pineapple coming- there's a lot of snow available to melt.

The Sleep Dep strategy has some downsides.

The sleep dep strategy *does* have some downsides, and in my opinion, the no sleep kit strategy also has some downsides too, lol.

Did he decide to bail and then change his mind (and then become confused)? Was he lost? So curious about how his ride plays out!

Even when he goes off course he goes far.
i usually went off course on long downhills with long grinds back up.  rarely uphill.

Tom Anderson here in Eureka. I'm scratching from the race.

The conditions have been unbelievable. My tracker stopped working coming down Koko Claims. I went too deep on day 1 and paid for it later. Seeing my tracker blink red added stress knowing that family and friends would be worried, so I was pushing harder on the morning of day 2 to get to Fernie. I called my wife and gave her some nearby race names that would be in the vicinity so she could have an idea of my location.  More stress as those riders would pass me on the climbs. I slept 8 hrs near Butts Cabin and day 3 started promising. Short snow hikes on Cabin Pass and several miles on Galton were difficult.  I got to the hotel in Eureka at 8pm with a small group.

I hadn't check the weather forecast until 10pm and see the turn for the worst. It will be brutal out there today.

Yes I slept and didn't make the decision until this morning. Good luck to those north of Whitefish.

In my history of marking MtB race course, I can say w/ some certainty"'Nobody ever got off course by accidentally turning Uphill"

i would urge you to GET BACK OUT THERE!
take a day and regroup. you've put so much effort to even get here. another shot may never happen-believe me.
you're likely over the worst stretch. nothing lasts forever out there. there's a new form of misery every day!
DONT SCRATCH!
finishing is priceless.
you can do this!
