Oh yes. Group think has to be involved.

Really interesting to think what would have happened had the de facto neutral support of Brush Mtn not been there.

I agree. Everyone would have to keep going to gain Steamboat or backtrack out of Slater Valley.

I'm sure the group mentality has sunk in. Waiting for someone to make the move...and now it's getting late in the day

Thank you SO much for the addition of the weather layer, Scott!  You're feeding my sickness, and I can now close at least one tab on my browser.

EDITED to add: this is crazy interesting!  Not necessarily what I needed as another "time suck', tho!  Some riders are experiencing headwinds, while others are getting a little break with a slight tail wind.  Those getting the headwinds are in warmer temps, while those with the tailwinds are getting rained and snowed on.  This insight is just another layer that facilitates us trying to get in the heads of these admirably crazy people and imagine what they're going through.  Thanks, again, Scott!

Care to cut & paste for us non FB users?

the text:   A momentary truce. Scenes from Brush Mountain Lodge and Clark, Colorado. Josh Kato, Chris Seistrup, Steve Halligan and Nate Ginzton have all been successful in getting over the pass and descending into Clark and Steamboat Springs. Rain, snow and mud soon after have made the road impassable. It’s 16 miles from the lodge to the peak and there’s word the other side of the pass is worse. This group made plans to set out at 3 a.m. this morning in hopes of better conditions, but awoke to snow. Hours later, it’s still snowing. In Clark, Josh Kato told us about looking for shelter near the top of the pass and finding a cave. He quickly kept trudging on when we spotted a cougar inside. This is a Tour Divide for the books.

It's a good thing that bodies stack easily at Brush Mountain Lodge.  There are enough great cycling stories assembled there to keep my attention for days!!

So I’m guessing it’s still a blizzard at the lodge and that’s why no movement?

Impassable mud
Maybe it will freeze up later tonight and riders will make a mad dash.

Hmmm...not too much mud there.  Maybe just a splash with some Simple Green... Cheesy

Seriously, that looks terrible.  Yeah, it doesn't seem like there's been much precipitation in the area today, but without either cold to freeze it or sun to dry it, it's going to be pretty miserable to push through.  And it's a long stretch...15+ miles to (I think it's called) the Watershed Divide crossing at the top of the climb, then several miles down to lower elevation before things firm up.  Even at a three-mile-per-hour pace (which might not be possible), it's probably seven hours...pretty painful.

Any thoughts on Josh Kato's status?  He's been stopped for close to 5 hours, which might be longer than any stop he's had so far.  Maybe a SPOT issue?  Maybe he's sleeping for a night push over Boreas?  Anyways...if he is stopped there in Silverthorne, I've been pondering his strategy...after the last couple of days, one can hardly blame him.  I'd be a puddle at this point... Cheesy

Looks like Chris blazed down Gold Dust trail.
Josh might be drying clothes and getting a rest through that mess he just went through.

I am in awe of Chris Seistrup - what a gnarly coupla days he just had. Saw a pic of him from this morning in knee deep fresh snow.

Now blazing down Elkhorn Rd with replenished supplies into clearing, wide open skies with a soaring spirit approaching the golden hour...

...that's how I like to imagine it anyway  Wink

From a Facebook post 2 hours ago: "After a few nights/days in freezing conditions I am drying out, getting checked out and eating a proper meal." He is referring to a reinjured shoulder. "I’ll get back out there but I just need a little pause."
