Josh isn't too far from the top of the climb, but he'll have to slog through snow on the other side for a while, too.  The riders will likely be exhausted, cold, and very wet by the time they can ride again.  Hopefully the convenience store in Clark has a good supply of hot chocolate and coffee on tap.

Josh is proceeding at 1 MPH. A highly trained athlete in excellent shape is barely moving.  That says a lot about the conditions.

EDIT:  I would die.  For real.

Looks like they will have to go through the Mines of Moria.

If you are the praying type, please say some prayers for these riders. Many of them, not just the front runners, are wet from rain before even hitting the snow in the passes. That is a perfect recipe for hypothermia and can turn deadly very easily.

+1 on that.  VERY dangerous conditions especially in remote sections.

Will do!!  I wonder if that's what forced Sofiane back to Brush Mtn.  Josh has started down the other side.  Based on where they appeared to start walking (not far after Brush Mtn Lodge), Josh may have to trudge almost down to Rd 62 before riding...we'll see...

These are the times...

And once the Race is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure whether the Race is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the Race, you won't be the same person who rode in. That's what the Race is all about.

I camped about a mile south of the Lynx Pass CG last night (in my camper, not in a tent). My goal was to get some photos of the leaders coming through this morning, but of course with the snow that wasn't to be! I had to be back home in Boulder this afternoon so unfortunately didn't get any photos of racers. However, this is the beginning of the downhill south of Lynx Pass at about 5:30 this morning.

The good news is it's warming up, and the snow is slushy and melting quick. The bad news is... it's warming up, and the snow is slushy and melting quick. It's gonna be sloppy and slow going up there for a while. Thankfully the roads aren't the New Mexico clay but of course there's the misery factor of riding in mid-30s weather and being soaked.

Also, I drove down the north side of Lynx Pass for a bit until I was blocked by downed trees. Not sure how long it's gonna take to clean those up (I would've made a start at it if I'd remembered my saw), but they'll also slow the riders down a little bit.

Being up there last night gave me newfound respect for ALL the riders. Such an amazing feat.

From the Facebook page:

"Sofianes update, his words:

It's all right. I got lost at the top of the col in the middle of the night. Can't find the way in the snow. I had to turn around because the temperature fell under the-5 degrees and that I'm not equipped to face these temperatures."

Those front-runners are creeping over Lynx, must be rough. Giving Lael some time to catch up though!

I think it was more in the context of wandering around lost at the top of a pass in the middle of the night.
