Yeah, I was wondering about Marty Johnson as well.  He was in Separ for an awful long time.  Sounds like he was having some issues with the heat maybe ??

Sobo and Nobo front runners are blazing!  Might have quite a collision with the golden spike this year.

Mr.Kato...good day to you..... not throwing down this year i see?Huh???

Anyone hear from Aaron D in a bit? He was off to a blazing start and hasn't tracked in over 16 hours. His dot shows him in in Eureka.

Watching with interest some of these names I'm not familiar with. I have been looking at their personal sites and FB pages. There some extremely accomplished riders/races putting in some long and blazing fast days. Dom, the NB'er has an interesting history of cycling and some significant records.

How does going North play into race wins and any record runs. Also, I am assuming he will be the only one to ride the entire route due to fires. If summer monsoons start and help with fires/closures, maybe??

When does the touring mode rule on Trackleaders apply? Do they wait a day or two in case people have problems on the first day or are just taking their time getting into the swing of things?

I don't think we've ever gone to white dots earlier than 5-7 days into the race.  Unexpected stuff always happens.

Dom already had to divert from the CDT in the Gila, and now will have to because of a fire in the Jemez. Nobody will have a pure red line route this year.

If it continues to be hot, dry and windy, the SoBo's may have quite a different route in northern NM as well. Every year, and every ride, is so different, it's hard to compare.

Hey Scott,
Are you going to activate the weather layer? It's always interesting to see who's getting dumped on & who's getting lucky!!

I was wondering about Denberg too. Still bummed that Justin D's spot isn't showing, but he's at least posting vids over on the FB.

Not in the cards for me this year...lots of excuses, but they are all stupid and boring.  Still such a beautiful ride, good luck to all the tough folks still out there!

From Irvine's Facebook page..I think he is serious about this race...

"It’s taken almost two years of preparation to get to the start line, and I am indebted to Professor Simon Jobson (Coach), Dr Jonathan Paulus (bike designer), Paulus Quiros bikes (bike builders), Rianne Costello (nutritionist), fat lad at the back (kit, thanks Ricardo and Lynn), Nigel Harrison (friend and colleague), Jo Davies (Psychologist), Bob Campbell (technical advice), Bike-Bag (Jon and Helen) for their support. I have also been the lucky recipient of the most amazing amount of love, encouragement, support from my family,...

Whether I make it a mile or get to the end, it’s already been an incredible journey and adventure.

Dom"

Marty Johnson had issues the first day in Separ, now I see he is in Silver City last few hours, visited a motel and pharmacy. Anyone have intel on his situation?

I rode with Marty in 2015, and bumped into him in 2017 along the trail.

Hope he is OK.

We didn't see Marty at our shop, but reports were he was really struggling with heat exhaustion. Left Separ, realized he wasn't good to go till Silver, took some time to recover.

I missed some great opportunities for photos of the NB leaders...
Dom looked solid . he stopped for 10 min to get food & water.  I've never seen so much evaporated salt on a human before - big crystals standing off of his ears...

Chase Medina got a new chain - was in great spirits.

One of these years a NB rider will win & folks will realize it's the better direction... ;-)

Crikey I forgot about the radar layer.  It's there now, thx for the reminder.

I've asked Justin for his SPOT login deets (yesterday, I think) so I can dig in and see what's amiss.  He tracked OK with the same setup in the AZT so it's an odd one.

Larry Shaw, the early NoBo ITT might have gotten through NM before closures, but I haven't checked his history page.  Here's hoping for some rain here in the west.

Thanks Scott!!

For the time being, Justin D. is riding with John Wright from AUS. He just posted a snowy crossing of Red Meadow Lake, both snow on the ground and currently falling from the sky. Looks divine...

If I did the race again I would be going Nobo (not that I would be anywhere near winning pace  icon_biggrin). That Gila kicked my butt Sobo and I would prefer to get it out of the way early while still fresh-ish. Shame the racers missed the Gila H.A.B. this year.  icon_biggrin

Dom is crushing it so far. Lets hope he can keep it up. Anyone know anything about the NoBo rider Swiz?

Looks like the first scratch is Grizzly Adam. Didn't even make it as far as last year?!

Current first place rider Richard Dunnert has bypassed Seeley Lake and is heading into Ovando.  Guess I'm going back into town tonight.  Can't miss this opportunity.  In case you want to watch you can see it live via the Blackfoot Angler webcame at:

https://video.nest.com/live/6oAK3yyGlJ

it is just me or does anybody else see that this dude has been riding continuously since Fernie?  Like 1 day and 17 hours ago?

Correction: Second place. NoBo Dom Irvine is about 90 miles up on him...
