Sandstorm, regarding your fork decision: I think much of it comes down to whether you want the Anything Cage mounts or not. I've ridden the Niner, Enve and Salsa and feel that they're all on par. You also want to make sure that both will work with your bike's geometry (likely).

Union is, because the old alternate (reroute) is now the main route and vice versa. Not sure about Wamsutter as I have not yet downloaded the cues.

Hey guys, Looking for some input on dynamo wheel overall weight.
I am building a SP PD-8x dynamo on a DT-swiss rim (xm401) was thinking brass nipples and double butted spokes. I think the wheel will be about 1125.76 grams. Is that to heavy? Just about right? Average for a dynamo wheel? I don't know, I've never built one nor have I seen one in person.
Looking for opinions on wheel build options, I don't wan't to build the heaviest wheel but I also want it to be reliable on the divide.

Make sure that you check the hub for looseness. I bought a brand new PD-8X and a day before flying out found that if I pushed the axle in from the disk brake side, the axle would wobble. It was a known defect and I am waiting on a warranty return of it. Finding something like that a day before leaving IS NOT a good thing. It held up well though. |

I went ahead and had a SP-PD8x dynamo hub built on a DT Swiss rim. Excited to try it out.
Now I'm looking on for advice on a carbon fork set up. Trying to decide between the Niner RDO or the Salsa Firestarter. Any advice would be great!
I'm going with an MRP Rock Solid fork on my next build. Round tubes makes it easy to mount multiple water bottle cages. |

I'm going with an MRP Rock Solid fork on my next build. Round tubes makes it easy to mount multiple water bottle cages.
I used the MRP Rock Solid in '16 with 27.5 Stans Arch Ex rims and 2.35 Ikons. No issues with the fork at all. I can't compare it to others as it is my only fork, but it worked flawlessly. I think Val Kato used one in '14. |

In PM conversations with Josh Kato, he said that if he didn't use a Lauf, that he'd go with the MRP. I am surprised at how light they are.
I wasn't sure how I'd like having bottles on the forks, but I found that I could easily reach down and grab a bottle while riding. The weight down there didn't have any adverse effects on handling. That gives me about a gallon of water storage but I can also use bottles for trail mix or similar.

I've run the TD with the Rock Solid twice now. A bit more jarring, but lighter than my Rock Shock. A friend has the Lauf and swears by it, having raced the Aotearoa with 'em. If I weren't poor already....
Water on forks: While I've never used 'em, I did ride in 2013 with two riders that did. I lost count after 7 times when water bottles were ejected, and twice where the mount itself came off. Personally I don't want anything near that lethal front wheel that may get tangled.

There's a funny story behind my bottle holders. The first time that I used them, I lost 2 bottles in the first 3 miles of USFS road. I had one left to last me another 50 miles and I was parched when I got back to the truck.
I ended up making some tabs out of EPDM. They wrap onto the bottle holder and then have holes that go over the spout of the bottle. I haven't had an incident since. I'll have to post a pic to show what they look like.

Hi Everyone... I'm a TD Rookie and getting v excited/scared. Im racing to raise money for Love Hope Strength Foundation having done Route 66 and N to South NZ for them. Just thought I'd introduce myself :-) Ive done a short You Tube Video as a letter of intent lol ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sqa4gF0jTY&t=89s) I'm going to do a I.T.T about 1 1/2 weeks after the GD aiming for sub 25 days! EEEKKK Few quick questions to throw out there... When is the GPX route likely to be available and from where? And wildcamping/bivvying in Bear Country... is it that scary or totally inadvisable (I am buying bear spray!) finally I have an older style SPOT GPS messenger and am having trouble adding tracking to it... does anyone else have this type of SPOT and any ideas? that's about all for now - sure there will be far more questions in the next few months! Hope to see some of you on the road next year! |

Well, the GPS track will be at: http://topofusion.com/divide/gps.php Get it now, load it into your GPS and see if it's all there ( the complete route, not just part of it ) Lots of people wildcamp in Bear Country. Others wouldn't do it under any circumstances. There are restrooms along the route that some folks use, and a couple of cabins in Canada, between Banff and the Border that are handy. Don't know about that SPOT, sure others will chime in. Also a good resource is a Facebook group called Tour Divide Racers page ... there's a pinned post at the top that has a lot of navigation stuff, letter of intent, signing up on Chris's site, trackleaders, etc, etc. Have a great ride. |

Happy Holidays 2017 Tour Dividers! Keep those pedals turning and watch out for the egg nog! Anyone have a personal training camp in mind? I'll keep my training rolling with a combination of fat biking, dirt road riding, trainer sessions and strength work. If you don't have a coach, consider one! Still lots of gains can be made in the next five and a half months.

I used the MRP fork in TD back in 2012 absolutely loved it. It smoothed out washboards better than any other rigid fork I've ridden! Happy holidays to all you TD schemers out there. 6 months to go...time to nail down your training plan and double down on the prep work :-D |

Wamsutter is not
The Wamsutter reroute that was used starting in 2015 isn't part of the official ACA GDMBR, it's something that Matthew worked on for the Tour Divide to get around expected road construction, and heavy truck traffic due to the building of a windfarm. |

Well I am a 'Rookie' that has been wanting to make this trek for a number of years. As of right now I'm looking hard at 2017 being a possibility. Looking over this start list and was pretty surprised at the number that are already signed up! I mean I know the TD has been getting more popular but that was still surprising. I guess the proof will be on the day of how many actually pull the trigger. |

All I can say is sitting at work the day of the grand depart and watching the dots start to move is terribly exciting. Even more so since last year I knew I'd be up there a week after the GD to ride solo SoBo.
