If Jay Petervary began two days after the grand depart, why is his total elapsed time within just a few hours of the riders who began 48 hours earlier?
Because:
1. he's riding an ITT (his ET starts when he starts, and not at the GD start); and
2. he's Jay Petervary.

To be seventh on the trail after giving the field a 48-hour head start is nothing short of amazing.

Thanks. I understand that he's doing an ITT, and as you state,  the clock for his attempt begins at his chosen departure time. Therefore, it would seem that his total elapsed time should be somewhere over 10 days and not the 12+ days that is listed...

JayP's elasped time at Sargents was 10d11h27m. Josh K's at the same point was 10d10h41m.

JayP is going well, but on that split he'd be in 3rd place.

I have been following the TD for years as they come right through my town.
Last evening (Tues. 6/20) I decided road ride and do a lap of lake Dillon a common ride around here. I went in a clockwise direction as the TD route goes opposite that on the west side and Jay Petervary  was coming off of Ute Pass into Silverthorne and I hoped I would bump into him going in the opposite direction. I saw him just as he came up on the Dillon dam road and turned around and got to chat with him across the dam.
It seems that he is one with the bike perfect fit.
He said no mechanical issues, changed out brake pads in Steamboat also tried a chain but "it wouldn't take".
He said his wrist was fine on the bike and didn't bother him much there.
He also said lots of wind this year and it was really hot down at Radium on the CO river crossing.
It was a lot of fun to talk with him.

It is truly amazing what these folks are doing. As an avid bicyclist I still can't get my head around what they are doing.

I hope to meet up with some more TDers. as I go for bike rides around here in the next month.

Looks like Rickie Cotter missed the Golddust trail. In Como now, hope she realises, rides back up, then enjoys the descent. One of, if not the best, piece of singletrack on the route.

Long story, she lost about 4 hours. All is good now, missed the Gold Dust last night.

Where are you seeing total elapsed time?

I just look at route distance per day, which would put him in second place, right between Brian and Josh.

The more I watch results, the more impressed I am by Lael's record time!  I know weather and reroutes may have impacted comparing one year to the next but damn!  She's a stud!

BL just put 60 miles into Kato since early this morning! Is this going to go down as the race winning move? Kato has proven he can pull out some serious chase moves, but considering BL has had a few hotel nights in the past few days, he could prove to be un passable in the next few hundy to Antelope Wells.

thoughts?

I combine JP's moving time and stopped time to come up with the total elapsed time. As of a few minutes ago, that procedure showed that Brian Lucido's total elapsed time was less than 2 hours more than JP's. Doesn't jibe if JP left 48 hours after the grand depart... Agreed?

Agreed, that doesn't make sense. If you go to their full history, you can see when their first ping was, almost 2 days different.

My thoughts are not just ~60miles, but also 6hrs gap as of my own time check comparo at the turn at Pueblo Pintado.  Gotta look at distance separation, time separation, terrain, moving speed, and stopped time.  JK got the time gap down to 2hrs early yesterday by riding late and getting up early, but then moved slower throughout the day especially over Polvadera Mesa where BL went Abiquiu-to-Cuba ~2.5hrs faster.  On top of that, JK got a late-ish start this morning most likely to drop into Cuba when most food options are open by 7am.  I think it cost JK to not have made Cuba by 11pm-ish last night to resupply/fuel up before closing times instead.  Additionally, having fueled and rested early evening in Cuba, BL was up and at it by 3am this morning.  I think it's gonna come down to those types of 'stopped time' logistics tonight and what conditions they encounter on the roads into Pie Town and into and through the Gila NF.

Also amazing to see Ben S having caught up to Stefan M in Abiquiu, for joint 3rd place lunchtime chit-chat.

totally agree!

I think Brian has made his race by having hotel nights in Salida, Del norte and Cuba....a critical stage of the race and he had three hotel nightsout of four while Kato was sleeping rough. No matter how tough you are this will make a big difference.
