in the nicest most respectful way possible, i hope that some of you out there, in the wee dark hours of the nights, have some kind experience with Mr. Mike Hall-  RIP Mike!

If they can manage it, I expect Mike Hall and Dave Blumenthal are following the race for sure.  Be safe out there, everybody!!

By my count. ~31 racers opted for an off-route Elkford night's sleep.  I wonder what the folks who run the motel complex are thinking?  Last year they were flooded with riders.  Sparwood of course, will see no one this year.

Steve Halligan tore his derailer off. Di2 xt/r as well. What a bummer. Will be fun catching up when he eventually gets moving again.

I'm guessing the businesses in both Elkford and Sparwood will campaign pretty hard to get the bridge repaired ASAP.

Anyways, in bigger news, there's a roller derby tournament in Fernie today starting at 9am.  I can't believe the leaders are passing that up!

It appears Greg got over (I think that's) Harvey Pass without too much fuss.  We'll see what Cabin and Galton bring...

I think I would have stocked up big at Bolton Creek rather than do those extra miles....unless I was wet and cold. Then it would be a tough call.

The leaders are making great time, despite the conditions on day one. I take it they miss Cabin Pass with the reroute?

Nope, Cabin Pass, The Wall, and Galton Pass are all still on route.

Great. I thought Cabin was further North. Cabin Pass was pretty. I'd hate for them to miss it.

How is that Greg Gleason going! Go the "older racers"! Let's hope he keeps something in the tank for the next 2 weeks.

2017 participants will miss the Flathead Pass water slide, but are getting a rock garden in exchange so no one should feel slighted!

Good Morning from Ovando Montana.
After years of suggestions and cajoling from dot watchers and cyclists along with their friends and family I am proud to announce that many non-technical minds got together and installed the first Ovando live streaming web cam.  It is place on the Blackfoot Angler and is looking north.  The SOBO riders will be entering from the upper left.  NOBO riders from the lower right.

Yup that is ALL of "downtown" Ovando.

All we ask is that one doesn't sit on it for hours on end as we are very rural with very rural bandwidth.  In other words we're not sure what will happen if dozens of people watch it for hours.  It does have night vision IR so riders arriving after hours are urged to step up  to the deck at the Angler and "say cheese".  I'll then try to grab a screen shot and post their photos.

Keeping fingers crossed this works!!!  Enjoy!

Seriously?  Of course we are.  :-)  All of the $$$ from  the Ovando Improvement Fund went to this and the newly upgraded and smart phone compatible ovandomontana.com website.  Speaking of which I need to share that new cyclist friendly section......

thank you for asking!

New section must be tough, we don't have anyone over the border, into the states, yet! I believe in year's past, the faster peeps could get through Canada sub-24, which you know: blew my mind, fer sure.

The collection of people near Elkford this morning is just amazing - there's a "30 day" flag near them that just don't seem right. I can't imagine that may people at that slow of a pace. Something tells me they all had an interesting night out there, or an extra round at Elkford! Ha!

Reminds me of those old pictures of the line of Alaskan Gold Rush prospectors trudging up the pass at Skagway.

Either that or they've formed a line and are passing bikes up hand over hand.

Funny, I was thinking of the Chilkoot Pass too when I saw that lineup in slo-mo replay. It's been so wet out here in both Southern Alberta and the Kootenays that I can only imagine the carnage on the trails. Looks like we are getting better starting today but probably too late for the racers.
