I need to get the message out to all riders regarding 2 great eateries I found last year on my divide trip. Best food I ate the whole trip :-) and you'll really need to head in there if you want a great fill. Rawlins, Wyoming) Steamboat Springs (best breakfast burrito ever!) Makes me hungry just thinking about the food here. Beat the usual diet of gas station junk. |

I'm out of contention for the first rider to pie. Since my encounter with a motorist who wanted to make a grave marker out of a cyclist on the Grave Creek Road after Eureka, MT I've been unable to properly race. When the truck driver aimed at me I had no choice but to head off the road. Anyone that has been on that road knows that the right side drops a long ways down into Grave Creek. Basically, to keep myself and bike from ending up at the bottom of the canyon my legs/feet were twisted in the rocks on the hillside. There is only so fast a guy can go while eating Alieve and Advil like M&M's (plus I don't professionally recommend it at all).
My left knee took the brunt of the twisting and while I could ocassinally go quickish things kept declining. By the time I got just past Helena I couldnt go more than 10mph on the flats with a tailwind.
Lots of stuff can happen out there. Dropping out because of a self-sustained injury like crashing in mud or pushing my body too hard would be painful but acceptable. Ending my race, while feeling in the best physical condition of my life, because of an act of another person is unacceptable. This was going to be the last of my racing. I've never been all about records or first place. It's always been the journey.

sad to see you drop out of contention for this year's edition - was hoping you had gone into stealth mode to make a run at Mike Hall - that would have been exciting to to watch -- stay safe and best of luck. |

Lots of rain over Western Montana - Wonder how that impacted Mike Hall as he moved from Polaris to Lima. I know that the Bannack road is known for bad mud.
Also looks cold from Lincoln to Helena. Lots of riders in that area right now.

Holy.....I've ridden that highway a couple of times as part of an awesome, quiet scenic 140 km loop. It's a rare paved road ride that I actually enjoy because it's so lightly traveled that I feel safe on it. So sorry to hear of Josh's injuries and exit from the race. |

So sorry to read this, Josh. I was reading several reports about your record winning race last year and you, a normal guy, who's not ultra racing all the time, finally were the reason for me to become a blue dot follower this year. I was impressed of your dedicated preparations and your new rig. But, as you already mentioned, a lot can happen at the TD. So, please don't be too sad, go ahead and begin preparing for 2017. No, simply continue, as there wouldn't be a TD this year. We all want to see a second Kato comeback! Thank you and all the best from Europe.

Dean and Tom have been leap frogging. Apparently, Tom switched to gears before the race. Josh, I'm so sorry to hear that you're out. Glad you're safe and I wish you a speedy recovery. I really hope the driver gets caught. It's kind of funny how Guy Martin is the Where's Waldo of the Tour Divide. I hope he's having a blast. |
