BB story sounds pretty plausible though - are there any truly GOOD BB these days, that don't break after a coupla days on the TD? I had to change mine 2 or 3 times one year.

I'm not saying threaded BBs are superior, but they work, pretty darn good and better track records than Press Fits. I can change them out on my own, and if a I hear things creaking I can at least unthread, slap on some grease and see it it helps. With PF BBs, it's not a one and done. Also with PF40, PF30, PF92000 gazillion, you could show up to a bike shop and they won't have it, most shops will have threaded BBs.

Lael is top 10 now! Amazing.

I watched a video on the different BB styles cropping up now. In some cases it gives the frame makers more leeway to make a stiffer frame for both rigid and suspension bikes. Most new trends are met with skepticism and some justifiably so! Who would of run a 29er 10 years ago. Probably couldn't get tires anywhere! Same with Dynamos. Pretty common today.

BTW, for those of you who follow professional Cross Country racing I wonder if you've noticed how much Lael and Howard Grotts look alike.  And climb alike.  Check Lael's climbing segment times versus the front-running men

funny and great observation....whoever she is....she is killing it.  These front runners and all the others that attempt to do this have my utmost respect...they are full on badasses!!!

Lael is the type of gal who'll bikepack to Scott and I's place in Tucson with her partner Nicholas after spending 6+ months bike touring, go on a three hour ride with us the next day, run the Tucson Marathon the day after (after riding to the start the night before and combat camping behind a Walmart...or something of the sort), win her age group and get top 5 overall, and then head out bikepacking on the Arizona Trail towards Phoenix 24 hours later with a giant bottle of Sriracha in her framebag.

If there's someone who's going to take my record down, there is absolutely no one else in the world who I'd rather it be than her.

True badass.

If it says 1/2 mile then that is just a Spot discrepancy.

I wondered about that.  Trackleaders was showing them leap-frogging one another, which I thought wasn't likely.

If you mouse over the point it will also show you when it was recorded.  Sometimes one was 6 minutes previous and the other was 10 minutes, meaning they are actually together.

When I saw him yesterday in Doyleville he had mentioned that he was surprised his Spot batteries hadn't died yet - my guess is they finally gave way and that he is still up riding with Jay. Just a hunch.

Katie Monaco is in Wyoming just ahead of the 25 day pace. At least the green backpack and flip flops match her gear in Banff and I think a photo somewhere with Jill (she is another Missoula Dirt Girl). She was commenting at the start that she was surprised how comfortable her off bike shoes were for riding, but she does have a real pair of uncleated shoes with her too.  Good luck Katie!

Why does the Wamsutter route give an advantage (assuming no highway construction)?

From what I understand, the entire route this year is ~40 miles shorter than the 2012-2014 route, most of it being the Wamsutter reroute. The route cuts south far sooner and doesn't do those heinous zig-zags in the Basin anymore on the way to Rawlins.

Apparently they're building a giant wind farm on the road south of Rawlins. Last year, the construction people said they weren't going to let people through during construction hours but seemed to look the other way when the race came through. This year, they said they weren't going to let anyone through during the day, period. I guess the overall plan is to pave the road and build the farm...which I guess will lead to many years of the Wamsutter route/having it be the new 'official' route.

I don't think anyone would really mourn Rawlins no longer being a trail town...or the highway approach into it.

Just kidding, but do bike shops in TD check for hidden motors on BB? I can not believe the speed the top contenders are moving. Lael putting so many miles on Ezter's record. Ezter finished 7th on 2012! Wow.

Everybody runs em. They power them with the Dyno Hubs. ; -)  Please post more vids of UCI officials pulling BB, I need the Laughs.

So for those that have done it, how much does knowing the course help in the last 3rd?
Knowing what to expect and when is critical.  There are some long empty stretches in NM and the roads get worse (some are worse when wet, some badly washboarded, some are harder at night).  On the other hand, knowing about the washboard stretch north of Pie Town isn't necessarily so good for one's morale and so that might not be so helpful.  Resupply is sketchy depending on time of day so the more resources you're aware of, the more options there are.  New Mexico is really hard.  You're tired and the terrain doesn't relent until the last day.

Can someone please air drop Neil some batteries? I have some blue dots to watch! All kidding aside...what a great race this year for the men's and women's categories. It's been a real pleasure to watch. Strait up humbled by the talent.

Wamsutter is the planned future route. One rider struck by a truck / nearly killed on MineralX Rd is enough. Wamsutter route (itself) is indeed -40mi, but tougher riding and all dirt (-75mi of Rawlins pavement). The approx riding time diffs Sobo (as measured by JayP) from where the two routes split / converge are as follows: Into Rawlins = 8hrs; into Wamsutter 5.5hrs. Out of Rawlins(to Slater)=8hrs; out of Wamsutter=6hrs. Wamsutter is also a faster / more centralized pit stop. Rawlins is a trap. Initial feedback from mid pack on Wamsutter route as reported by Kirsten at BML is, "tough, more exposed, slightly better wind cooperation, HOT" One plus is delicious solar-pumped fresh water occurring 40mi out from Wamsutter just as one begins to unravel.

JayP's BB isn't the only one to fail.  another cutthroat on their publicity run with the Radavist had the BB blow up as well.  I saw it on Instagram.

Personally I'd rather have a custom steel US made bike made over a Chinese made carbon frame anytime.
