I know it's not the official record (because of fire detours), but it would still be kind of cool to see Mike Hall's 2013 pace flag to see how his ride would stack up to the current leaders.

I saw Lael's route was off the marked line, is this a valid course detour?

It's amazing to me how the lead 6-pack has opened a 230 mile gap on the field. Dang.

I rode out and welcomed Neil Beltchenko to Clark, CO this morning. Got to ride and talk with him for a few miles down the lower descent and flats coming in to the Clark Store. He seemed in good spirits and mentioned that he must not have gotten the memo about how rough the cobble section is dropping towards Clark from the pass and that it took him a bit by surprise. I told him that that may be the roughest descent on whole GDMBR. He also said he wanted to get his bike checked out in Steamboat thinking that he may have some bottom bracket issues.

A couple of shots of Neil coming in to Clark on RCR62:

After reading the Gypsy by Trade post on how it came to be that Lael didn't know about the reroute, and considering that she has no access to the internet, i.e.. she's doing the race as purely as it was meant to be done, I am all the more interested in how her race compares to EZ's.  Both EZ and Lael are as classy and ethical as this race could ever hope for and if it comes to pass that Lael does surpass Ezster's time I think there is one perfect way to settle if it should be recognized.  Let Ezster and Lael decide.  And remember Lael isn't even half way yet!

If Lael could go through Rawlins and have it still count, how come Saul Britton couldn't?

Now 30 days is ahead of 25 days Smiley

Maybe taking nine people who did about 25 days, and computing their median for each time point every 10 minutes, would give a more accurate 25 day flag.

Go Neil! (and everyone!). Steamboat is the perfect place to come in with something that needs replacing.

I can totally see both sides of the issue re: Lael. Ugh. Keep on having an enormous amount of  fun, I'm in the vast majority watching and not riding and envious (in a good way!). Onwards!

I think the difference is course "Record" vs race.
I think it was stated that she could still qualify for the route record.  No one has stated that it would still qualify as winning this year's race though(although no one has stated either way on this).  I think it should at the very least qualify as an ITT kind of record if she were to beat it.

Not much action on BP.net tonight so here`s a bit as the riders approach Silverthorne. JP seems to have hit the sack at about 10.30 on a Saturday night, as Neil keeps cranking to within 7 miles now. Temps are warm and no chance of rain. The leading 6 pack is 220 miles ahead of  somewhat normal people  just getting to the Great Basin. Lael and Marshal are still moving  at 11pm. Its hot here in the high country of Colorado, that was a hot day for the 6 pack in the lower elevations around the Boat.

Saul has not been DSQ'ed or marked as Alternator - his dot colour is still yellow as an ITT, just as it was from the beginning. It seems that despite the Rawlins diversion he took, his time still counts as far as I can tell.

An incredible race. Marshal bedded down with Esther's ghost, five others sleeping in the Basin, this I did too and remember a super sketchy storm with Lightning and spooky imaginary thoughts of wagon wheels in the night and the real sound of bike tires on dirt as Jefe and Kurt zoomed past in the dark then Eddie's crazy ass truck, and seeing them all at Rawlins the next day and being mega happy to be past those last bits and innocent,y thinking that was the hard parts done not knowing yet about how hard New Mexico really is.  The boys sleeping up in high Colorado I remember not liking that part with all big mines and mills all over the place and thinking about atomic energy and how many rads I was getting and being happy to get towards the endless Gatorade supply back down where all the rich folk fly in to do outdoors holidays. Como Depot coming up an absolute jewel in my view!! Enjoy it all and Marshal when you read this later - respect brother you are killing it and inspiring me.

I know this may be of little consolation to you....but "Always Believe".
Believe you can 1st finish such an Epic Race; 2nd that you might have no problems then again, you might as anything that can happen on the Tour Divide.
Learn from any errors that might seem to surface more clearly (in the now) will only get you more encouraged to come back a 2nd time to try it yet again!
Life is SO much about perspective. Keep your perspective in that " The fact, that you showed up for such an Epic Race; is a TRUE testimony to the person you truly are"
Your making your heart sing!
You've given your 'self' the chance by choosing it.
When the time is right, for your 2nd chance, seizing the opportunity will shed a lot more light on the life you wish to lead; and personal challenges you wish to over-come.
Best Wishes for GREAT pushes as I would say to a GOOD friend and Canadian Champion "Cory Wallace"
Everyone else, I really hope you ALL enjoy your Epic Adventurous Ride of a life time.
For some.
This won't be your last crack at this.  nono
Just keep believing.
If "You" can believe it. Envision it. Then its yours for the choosing to do.
Keep'er going everyone! Keep'er going!
You CAN do this!  headbang

Lael's situation points out an inherent issue with TD records.  Most years the TD course has had changes, either planned or due to snow or fire or even construction.  That is the nature of such a huge beast in terms of length and time to complete.  I've always thought comparing one year's effort/result to another year's is misleading.  There have been a good number of rides that due to conditions were slower in terms of elapsed time than a record, but were more remarkable.

Seems to me that records should be only considered in the context of those in the TD grand depart for that one particular year on the official TD route for that year, and that any all-time records should be on a standardized route set by the ACA.  This standardized route would have to be set as the "official race record route" and not changed over time - in a way like how the UCI has standardized the bike specification for the hour record.  Otherwise comparisons of all-time records don't mean as much as comparisons within any individual year.

In any event, super great racing this year...so many doing so well is motivating to this armchair participant.

New update on Lael's situation.  IMO, she is riding in a completely honest manner and what she's doing should count for the record.
