And this is the final post for the SOBO TD riders. How sad. Only 7 days this year.
Today we had white dot riders who were proud of it:
Jim Trumpy, 66 yoa out of FL who is riding with a left leg stitched from one end to another after a fall around Whitefish. [he swears he didn't fall asleep on the trail. :-) ]
Spencer Glidden of AZ along with Kathryn Wallace, formerly of NZ and now of AZ who spent the night in the teepee in town.
and very much lastly, my official caboose of the tour:
Chad Edge of IN that although he is Orange he is still pushing forward and still all smiles.
So now we await the few NOBO's and hope they make it here.
It's been fun!

Nice work Angler, now to wait on the NoBos, eh? I still remember the delicious bread pudding y'all in Ovando cooked up, when I swung by. I don't think the TD was that much of a Thing, but y'all were certainly a great pick me up after Fleecer.

Is that a Tioga Spyder saddle on Marketa "Peggy" Marvanova's bike?
Sure looks like it. Newer version (maybe) than mine. I love this saddle. Works great for me and is surprisingly comfortable giving there is no padding. |

Marshal: Walgreens- Mueller neoprene ankle brace. It is a simple velcro wrap that does what Kurt was describing. Wore it for 2K last year. I was shocked at how effective that little bit of support was at managing my achilles. Easily fit in my shoe. I got the idea from a quick internet search on the road. A prior TD rider with a long track record of achilles problems said it worked for him so I followed.
Keven: Incredible ride. See a good sports physical therapist when you return and look at your Glut activation. Chances are you are using too much quad on that one leg, exacerbated when you get tired. It is a common issue with cyclists and long events and SS bring it out. Come back next year with "Gluts of Steel".

Agree, young Will Bodewes is riding at a maturity level well beyond his 17 years as is younger brother Luke at 16 years. They rode together for the first 4-5 days before Will said seeyalater and has gapped the young fella by 175 miles. so JP looks camped out in DelNorte...this next section or distance to Abiquiu is 201 miles or so.....it looks rugged and mountainous.....what is it comprised of: how much dirt road, any singletrack, elevation etc........just curious on what he is facing?

The Polvedera Mesa after Abiqui was a beast for me to get to Cuba, after Cuba it's a road ride to Grants. IMO all of NM is a beast, but for JayP? I don't it's that big of a deal. Unless it's raining and the mud is in effect.

Ditto Polvedera Mesa. What Matt Lee from Ride the Divide- "sand, rock, sand , rock...its brutal". I went up it all out as I was being chased by a storm the entire way. Several times i felt a tear well up as I crested what I thought was the last climb only to see it went on. A real kick in the gut. Physically and psychologically hard. Then as you get up high and you think you are done climbing..it just rolls up and down. The ups are slow...the downs are slower. One particular downhill had no ridable line. Not good at night or in the heat. I need a beer just thinking about it.

I run some cheapo Chinese Ebays ones that look very similar. Steel rails & soft plastic Seem as durable & comfortable as a broken in Brooks. 200gm not heavy or light. I think mine was $18. Holes help keep the air flowing too. |

We are nearing the end of the southbound TD riders, just a few more to come in the next couple days. We had 4 TD riders spend last night @ the Montana High Country Lodge and another 4 stop in for breakfast this morning.

Long hot trails with sand pits and rocks as others wrote...and the dogs of Vallecitos...one of the scariest bits for normal humans. I remember being out of water before Hopewell campground and riding past a rancher who looked liked Curly in City Slickers in a black shirt and South American sunglasses and a big ol cowboy hat on a horse. He didn't offer me any water or hello in fact I thought he might shoot me just for being stupid. |

I vote for the Gila after the work center as being the hardest... Maybe because I rode it in the dark with a big thunderstorm rolling in. I was with Michael Cleaver and we were stopped by some forest service owl researchers who told us that we should probably go back as they thought the canyon we were in was likely to flash flood and they were getting out ... in their big pickup truck. Also I have to put in a good word for the dreaded hounds of Vallecitos. I stopped riding while they were in hot pursuit and they all stopped chasing me and came over with wagging tails. I think they are in it for the thrill of the chase not the kill, or maybe they had just caught someone else and were tired...  |
