James Kirwan called in from Whitefish to say he has to stop due to a knee injury. He does give a report on the snow!

Make sure you are using the 10k point simplified track.

I finished the 2013 TD.  I did the whole damn thing,
excluding the 2013 detours, in good style and—as
far as I know—totally in accordance with the rules.

You can drop the track in few small tracks.
You open the file in basecamp and you can made this. Is easy, but not for me to explicate in english... But I try!

-double click in the track (left of your screen)
-in the window with all the points you click on "option" button
-you found the point you need (point 9999 in example)
-click with right mouse button
-drop file (in italian is "dividi traccia")

The dropped file is saved, you can rename-it (GDR PART 1) and the rest of the track you can save as GDR PART 2

I have made a different sections, state by state, to have smallest files in my gps device...

Thanks Marco.  Just followed your instructions and it was dead easy.  I split into two files  - first with 9999 pts - ends up just sth of Helena and another of about 9500pts.  For those on basecamp on Macs - double click on the file to open it.  Scroll down to the last pt you want - for me 9999 and then click on the cogwheel (settings icon in the bottom left of the box) and select split track in two.  You can then rename each track.

Me and Robin Scwartz get into Calgary on the 10th at around 5pm.  We'll be putting out bikes together at the airport that evening then probably ride somewhere and camp or crash at the airport.  We'll be heading out sometime in to morning, you're welcome to join us.

Thanks Eric...  I just sent you an e-mail to see if possible to hook up on 6/11.  FYI to others that I hope to be on the road by 8:00 to 9:00 AM on 6/11 if possible.  In case anyone else is riding to Banff on 6/11.  I know that Craig Stappler has organized a ride to Banff on 6/12 which sounds like fun.

Thanks guys..... I am getting it now.  Marco the instructions were great.  I guess I have to work on decision making on no sleep or the tour could get pretty long.  I was laying in bed thinking about it and thought it must have to be broken up so thanks again for the instructions.

MTBCAST  HOW DOSE IT WORK ?
I tried to test record a 2 words message in my natal language (Hebrew), it seemed to be OK but there was no evidence to it.
Is it possible that a human transfers the messages from the recording module to the broadcast module?
If so, are messages restricted to English ?

Joe Polk manually posts the messages that are left on the machine.  Any language is OK.

Does anybody know if we leave the SPOT tracker on at night or turn it off? Will the tent symbol on trackleaders.com show up automatically after a certain time whithout moving or is it due to some action we have to do? Thanks for your hints.

The tent symbol is automatic.  Most folks turn the unit off at night to save battery power and because you have to reset it once a day anyway for tracking.

I think I did get your message. Very short messages are usually ignored. Typically they have nothing in them but I did get one with a couple of words. As Bob noted, this is all a manual process. One reason is that I prefer to clean up the sound a little. Another is that sometimes people call, get cut off or run out of time, and call back. I edit those into a single call. The other reason is that I don't want dead air calls and such being posted and an automated system would probably do that or have to analyze the call itself.

For foreign language calls, I will do my best to clean the audio. If it's a two-parter that you had to continue on another call, if you could note that in english I can be sure to put them together. Something like, "Hey, I got cut off..." then I can merge them.

Hi mtbcast.
Thanks for the detailed answer. the test was indeed very short: "just a test"' 2 words in Hebrew: " שיחת נסיון".
I suppose that messages from the route will be longer.

I actually took a Hebrew class. It wasn't "official" but a Hebrew instructor from our college offered to teach it to some local ministers. He noted, "In about 3 weeks most of you won't be here." He was right. Sadly, I remember very little. But then again, we only had a few classes before everyone was too intimidated to continue.

OK, that's it for me.  My German is worse - I learned all that from watching Hogan's Heroes as a kid.

Sorry to hear this. Actually, German is pretty easy. I will give you an example: beer - Bier, wine - Wein (to be continued)....
If I get to meet and ride with you, it will be a pleasure to teach you even more. I guess there will be plenty of time during the TD for stuff like that  :-)

If no one can get you some, I can mail a few from Southern CA to an address in Banff (Y?). I got black and blue ones. I don't know about gray though. This is for a long travel (LT) model.
