Ya I have been super stressed trying to find all the parts for this thing and get everything in order before I leave. My bike is still in pieces until tomorrow then I fly out at 8pm. It'll all come together though, just one more night of restlessness. |

hi y'all NM's biggest recorded fire does look really close to the route, its up after pie town where you turn left on 159 and ride out to beaverhead work center. http://inciweb.org/incident/2870/hard to really see from way over here in switzerland. It looks like 2012 rider Chip Andrus was just riding there, maybe he knows more? Also the guys out in Silver City and/at Gila bike shop would maybe know. You've got like three+ weeks until you get out there so keep hoping for the best. Good luck on your race this year, be safe and keep smiling! dave |

One area in Arizona has already been closed to all public access by the USFS due to high fire danger. It's only a matter of time before more ranger districts follow suit. La Nina years are not good for the traditional Divide racing start dates. |

So, I finally decided to start thinking about how I am going to get from Antelope Wells to home. I usually make things up as I go but it looks like I might need to do a little planning for my AW escape?
What are my options? Some shuttle that runs 2x a day to Lordsburg but no way to contact them? Does anyone know what times they leave AW? Then Greyhound or Amtrak from Lordsburg? I need to fly after that so I guess I'll head to Tuscon, flights are cheaper out of there than El Paso.
Short of having someone meet me at the border, are there any other options? Yes, I am sure I could ride back up to I-10 if all else fails.

Hopefully it is correct that the fire is unlikely to spread east.Out of curiosity I looked at today's incident report, counter burns are being performed in the vicinity of FR 181/Eckie Burger Road, which is just NE of current fire perimeter, and not all that far from Beaverhead (≈10 miles). This would indicate that forest service is indeed expecting to stop the fire there, *just* away from our route. I recall riding through a recently extinguished area about 1 hour after passing Beaverhead in 2010, firefighters still on scene -the monsoon had put an early end to the fire (and an end to rapid forward progress on my part due to mud). Fuels in the area consisted of pine transitioning to "low" fuels like juniper. Dave Nice should pass through the area tomorrow, and will hopefully give a firsthand account. Possibly he will be the only one with a full pull ride on route in the face of possible preemptive closures  ?? So next question for meterologists, is the current weather pattern associated with an early monsoon season in NM? It will be interesting to see if the FS does indeed initiate preemptive closures...and what an alternate may look like. |

To get out of AW contact Sam Hughes, he lives in Hachita, very nice guy, 575-436-2662. He will transport you to Deming for a fee, you can also camp in his lawn...I mean sand flat.
