I like Mike's bike setup. He's opted for the disc brake and carbon route. He's using an On-one dirty disco carbon frame and has gone for Reynolds Assault Carbon Disc wheels with a mostly Ultegra group.

I wonder why he didn't opt to put some wider tires on though. He has room to spare and I would think something wider would be more comfortable over such a long distance without slowing him down.

Good question about tires. I know he is using 25c Michelin krylion carbon, or the new version of them. If were doing it I'd want 28c versions but they don't make them. But Mike swears by the comfort of a carbon frame.

I was talking to Sean at the start and he was taking 23mm and 25mm tyres with him for the different surfaces in different continents.  He will be on the 25mm currently I guess.

Looks as if Mike has completed his EU leg - can't wait to 'follow' along with him in India on his next leg.

Mike is travelling through Spain having covered over 27,000km in about 86 riding days.  He is hoping to finish in Greenwich, London, on 4th June which will be about 93 days. I think!  300km a day, every day.

Incredible.  His consistency has blown me away every time I have checked in on the tracker.  Just look at the race flow -- steady slope.

Wishing him the best on the final leg.

93 would be a new record by over ten days, correct?

Scott - the current record is a little over 106 days so perhaps 13 days off the record.  The current record was partially supported, and Mike is unsupported.

Amazing! Hard to believe he (and all the others) have been going since mid-Feb! What an adventure.

Scott - the current record is a little over 106 days so perhaps 13 days off the record.  The current record was partially supported, and Mike is unsupported.

The record as posted above is:

Currently the fastest circumnavigation by bicycle is 96 days, 10 hours and 33 minutes, and was achieved by Alan Bate (UK) who cycled a distance of 29,467.91 km (18,310.47 mi) and travelled over 42,608.76 km (26,475.8 mi) in total (including transfers).

but as as been noted that was supported for a significant portion of the journey.

I'm curious why so many have varied so much from their intended routes?  It seems you'd spend a TON of time coming up with the fastest route possible so it must be something significant that would alter your course?  It would be fun to hear about their logic in route selection (more slow travel over water where possible to gain resting time for example).

I can't wrap my mind around trying to figure out what the finishing time would be without the SPOT trackers.  It would be very difficult to manually keep track of and verify the timing  aspect given all of the travel involved.

mbeardsl - the quote you pointed to was incorrect, must admit I was caught out by this briefly a couple of months ago.  It has now been corrected:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_the_world_cycling_record

It will need updating again next week all being well.

I also wondered why the riders varied from original route.  It may be information received on the road from other travellers, will be interesting to talk to a couple of them at the finish.

One of the riders. Simon Hutchinson from Cavan in Ireland is currently in California making his way to Miami

Not a mistake as such - Wikipedia was wrong for some time - but has now been corrected.

This has been a great race to follow on facebook and by their spot trackers - they didn't post very often but when they did it gave us a great view into their mental state at the time (usually humorous) and what kinds of challenges they faced on this ride.  It seems like most challenges were in the airport and not on the road.

I'm all for seeing JayP smash this record next year.

Best interview so far - and it looks like Mike will be tackling the TD again in 2013.
