Jack Brennan, race director of Tour of the Gila and proprietor of Gila Hike & Bike phoned me yesterday to say they had ordered a Welsh flag to fly at the shop in Mike's honor. I'm happy to see Mike stopped in this morn. If that flag could make it down to AW somehow, hoisting it above the port is just the kind of stunt our border guard friend Tim would have fun with.  |

It's good to hear Forest Baker's update from Del Norte, as he is only a few miles from my husband. Desertrat, he had the nicest things to say about Brian, as did my husband, Leo. Sounds like you raised a wonderful young man!!
Also interesting/sad to hear Forest mention seeing the two paired up Swiss riders riding in a paceline. How would something like this be addressed?
My time off from work started today and I am leaving tomorrow morning to start a little road trip to (fingers crossed!!!) meet my husband at the border. This forum has been a great place to learn more about the race from various perspectives. As the wife of a rookie, I was so stressed during the first week, watching my husband's dot slowly zigzag through Grizzlyland. As he's settled into a pace and his initial knee and achilles issues have seemed to work out, I have relaxed, enjoyed any updates I've received and stopped refreshing riders' locations so frequently!
Thanks for the info, support and entertainment and best wishes to all the riders! You are all amazing!!!

I'm packing up to go get Mike.... I'M SO EXCITED!! Cooler full of snacks and notes from his friends back home! I wish I could pick up the Welsh flag too but it's not really on the way from PHX. BOO!

Mike is actually English, he lives in Cardiff.
I had two Brothers stop by about 5 years ago who are Welsh and poke it. I think there had been some doubt amongst the locals as to whether there was an actual Welsh language or I was pulling their legs.
It was my Chef's birthday so they sang Happy Birthday in Welsh.

I hope they take the detour. Mike clearly believed that the Forest Service was monitoring his route - said they called the cafe where he had lunch. If riders choose to violate the closure order it could mean trouble in future years. |

And yet GPS units, which receive a signal from space, pushed out from satellites that cost billions of dollars to place in orbit, with untold millions of dollars in infrastructure, mapping, etc. are OK?

New TDR signs - good or bad idea?
Any opinions you get here are just that. The trail is mapped out by the Adventure Cycling Association. They in turn, have no say in where a sign can go, that would be up to the government bodies and private landowners along the way. The reason the route has very few signs is not to keep the route a mystery, it is because it is not an officially recognized trail. Nice signs such as you describe might be welcomed by most users of the route, though approval would be a bureaucratically difficult. If someone put out a bunch of paper signs or surveyor tape for the race I'm sure the forest service, BLM etc would not be happy, and staying on route is indeed part of the race. GPS has made signs and maps far less needed. I'm amazed people still get off route, though there might be a foggy brain or two out there! |
