Just to let you know that JO is back on track, & mother can relax! I'm exhausted - I feel as though I'm in the TD too!
He keeps doing that 'stopped for x hours thing', doesn't he?  Just to add to the dot watchers excitement probably. ;-)  Good to see him doing so well.

Unfortunately these days if your in it to win it and know you can't win its easier to drop out.

OUCH!  Seems a bit harsh, scratching didn't seem like an easy option after listening to his call in.  We don't know what he was going through.

I'm guessing that Matthew will cut him some slack because 1) it is not a material deviation since he was on the outskirts of Como at the time and 2) he was incoherent.

I don't think the question is whether or not Matthew will cut him some slack, but, more importantly, will Toby cut him some slack?

I think the guy found him at the top of my drive, and he went back up the same drive.

The only person who would know for certain would be the guy who found him, I know he is a commercial pilot, tall and occasionally flies into Calgary.

He did go for a spin around town first thing to make sure he and the bike were OK, my puppy went with him.

Fortunately, it's not Toby's call. Smiley

FYI, Matthew Lee usually requests that people not speculate about a specific racer's situation until after the race is finished. Seems fair to me.

Does anyone know if there is a bikeshop in Rawlins? I have found mention of Gravity Sports and Highland Cycles, but it is unclear if either of them still exist.

They were not open last year even though they were in the phone book. Most of the locals were not even sure. I had a major mechanical and had to duct tape and jury rig until I made it to Steamboat Springs.

In reply to Randomlurker's post on Hydration: Wow, you are correct! Somewhat...lol.  All of these riders could benefit from IV therapy with the day to day rigors they are putting themselves through...

For those still wanting to ITT southbound (and can't because of Canadian conditions), and want a time to race against/compare, there is still the option of racing the US portion, as the somewhat defunct (Great Divide Race) has always done. That time is out there and documented, and is another record ripe for the pickin'.

In this context, I'm a a guy with a lot of opinions about self-supported racing. In general, I think that people should try to Do. It. Themselves.

Other than that, I'm just another guy on a bike, sharing life with a lot of amazing and wonderful people.

Anyone who sticks a needle their arm for anything other than a medical necessity needs to re-calibrate their outlook on life.

The post about the performance IV therapy and Eric Foster may well be a hoax, and a sick one at that.  If you Google the phone number included in the original post you get a link to a firefighter who died on the job in March of this year.  If you Google the company name you get a link to a company by that name who submitted a form for registration in the state of Arizona.  The application was submitted only a few months ago and has yet to be approved.  The picture of Eric and someone in the background that was attached to the original post has them grinning like the IV was a joke and the room is decorated like it is someone's living room.  I suggest we reserve judgement on Eric and let him respond when he has a chance.  As for the person who originally posted the advertisement -- you are pathetic.

Point well made. Thanks. I hope that it's a hoax.

Seems like smoke concentration and air quality in the Del Norte area is pretty bad right now. Mike Hall already reported having breathing problems back in Montana, so I wonder if he's going to be conservative about his forward progress in these conditions. http://apcd.state.co.us/colo_advisory.aspx

Let's get back to important stuff..  His spot is near the organic peddler....a shame if he can't cram down a burrito.  They have fueled many a GD rider.

IV Guy's post was not a hoax. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Standby-Hydration-Therapy/534440156600883 is full of cheering for Eric, and Eric lists them as a sponsor on his tracking page.

I'm not sure why everyone is in a twist about it, the only questionable thing I see is the advertising in his post, otherwise he's super supportive.

Go Eric! Go Forest! Both remaining triple crown riders will need an IV at antelope wells to accelerate the healing process. CTR comes extra early this year and starts with a bang.

I'd agree, under his particular set of circumstances..... the distance in his particular case, is immaterial. As a competitor, he pushed himself into town... and gained no material advantage time wise.

And who is our Red Caboose this year, for south bound, and north bound, on the Grand Departure plan? This is in keeping with the Golden Spoke (spike?") tradition of the Wild Wild West that these competitors race in.

The cycling world at large has already addressed this.

I realize that the TD is essentially an unregulated event, but the governing body for professional cycling (UCI) has a rule in place prohibiting the use of IV fluid replacement.  In the eyes of many riders and fans, and in consideration of the rules governing professional cycling, the use of IV's is cheating.  Perhaps this is why many here are in a twist about it.
