a few lucky riders made Pie Town on a Friday night. pretty special considering it is the only evening they are open. big meals, big pies, good sleep at Toaster House, and an early start on the Gila is not a bad combo.

Congrats to all of the riders who have finished, and the one's who continue to make their way to Antelope Wells. It has been a lot of fun watching the race unfold and to hear the stories of the riders. Even though my guy has finished, I will still be keeping an eye on everyone who is still out there. You are all incredible!

I'm not much of a message board joiner, and I've been lurking on Bikepacking.net for a long time, but I had to join to make a comment on the ride that my personal favorite this year has put up. I've been following this race since about 2005, when my hero Kent Peterson did the border to border race, through my heroine Jill Homer's ride in 2009, through Justin Simoni's ride last year, and probably most of all, this year.
I first heard about Katherine Wallace when she rode the Stagecoach 400 in April. By all accounts that was a tough ride, and she did remarkably well, for what was apparently her first big race.
I think the most amazing thing about her ride in the Tour Divide this year is how consistent and focused she appears to be. I say appears to be, because I don't know her, and all I know is what I see from her pink tracking dot moving across the map. She appears to get a good nights rest each day, and then proceeds to ride for the next 15 hours or so, neither looking right or left, but straight ahead towards her goal 115 to 145 miles down the line. She doesn't get lost or miss the turns to stay on-route, doesn't appear to get sick, or hurt, or have mechanical problems. She apparently knows how to fuel herself and keep herself hydrated (no mean feat in 80-100 degree temperatures). She must know how to take care of her bike and keep it running too, as its not obvious that she's taken much time for repairs. She's also apparently not afraid to camp out, as I think she's done most nights.
A couple of Fridays ago, as the race was going on, I took a day off from work, to see what kind of riding and climbing these riders do day in and day out. I rode about 30 miles of fire roads here in Southern California, with about 5500 feet of climbing in the first 13 miles. I was pretty knackered after about 6 hours of riding, and suitably impressed by what these riders do.
Katherine's closing in on Antelope Wells now, and I think she's had a remarkable ride. I just wanted to salute her effort, as well as those who've completed their rides, and those who are still working away at it.

Calls this evening: Josh Smith called in from El Rito! Jo Ann Burtard called in from Brush Mountain Lodge! Tracy Burge called in entering Wyoming. She’s feeling good! Brett Stepanik called in from El Rito! They ran into Jarral Ryter and his family on the route. Eszter Horanyi called in from Crested Butte for a wrap-up call! And Fixie Dave Nice called in from Seely Lake. He got a hot shower, feeling good, and can breath through his nose again thanks to something popping back into place!

I just did a tally of the status of all 95 people who were started in the Banff SoBo Grand Depart. I may be off in a few of the details, it's a little hard to keep track of it all, but I think it's pretty close.
Numbers below include those who may be relegated for rules violations. There are at least five riders, for example, whose SPOT tracks indicate that they missed sections of the route.
5 finished with average MPD >150. Age range 26-40, avg=34.
9 finished with average MPD between 125 and 150. Age range 29-49, avg=37.
21 still on course with average MPD between 100 and 125. Age range 27-57, avg=41.
10 still on course with average MPD between 85 and 100. Age range 22-61, avg=40.
16 still on course with average MPD <85. Age range 22-60, avg=44.
34 have scratched. Age range 23-71, avg=44. Eleven women started (including Caroline on tandem, and only one has scratched! Reasons for scratching (gleaned from info on personal web sites, forum and mtbcast).
1 "body just had enough"
1 injuries due to crash
10 foot, ankle and knee injuries
2 pace too slow to finish in available time
5 sick (pneumonia, pulmonary edema, Giardia, unspecified)
1 switch to touring
1 urgent family business at home
11 reasons unclear
Dave Goldberg leads the men's >50 age class. Jo Ann Burtard is the women's leader in the >50 age class.
James Hodges and Donald McCready are the only >60 riders still on course! The >50 folks are my heros.

To Michael Cleveland, don't know if u will see this or not but what a pleasure bumping into u in Kremmling this evening. (I was heading south to pine to do a trail 50 race and stopped off to eat early and saw the unmistakable TD bike outside) You were tired and were contemplating staying there but I see u made it to Silverthorne, excellent effort and again sorry to have harassed u but I did admit I had become a blue dot junkie following my good friend Dave Meissner. I will send u good positive vibes whilst I am out running my little 50 tomorrow . All u lads & lassies have my utmost respect. Be safe, Peace.

Wow! Chip's goal was 27 days and he does it in 21. That's moving...plus he's in the over 50 category...56 which I believe means he's the first person over 50 to finish. Great race! |

Congratulations to all the racers who finished up to now (Including those who provide the entertaining comments on this site from previous rides). I love the statistics from Amy, thanks. The TDR is truly an atheletic event.
Day 22 and it looks like we may have a race to the finish between Michael I and Georg D, at least from the perspective of this blue-dot junkie. Mikey appears to have taken off as of 6am. I'm behind Mike all the way, but Georg appears to have proven to be a worthy adversary and companion.
May the best man take the #15 spot!

What a great race this year with a 100% open course plus the new sections. Exciting with so many racers to watch... keep the photos, info, and analysis coming!
I am thinking I'm going to have to do it again... maybe in the >50 category - seems like a fast age to race! Dave Goldberg (TD class of '10) is ripping it up this year. Go Dave!

Katherine, you rode a great race. It appeared steady and focused from this vantage point. I too first noticed you while following the SC400. Now a big fan, looks like i am not alone!
Also a big shout out to Georg D and Michael I. You both have been riding so well. George spent a day with changing bikes in Salida but kept your drive to finish the race! Great job. Looks like you too have developed a friendship.
