The Scenic Byway is scenic, and it is tarmac, but from what I remember it is like riding a railway! The expansion gaps seemed really wide and there was a constant thud every few seconds and i think I remember it being a bit of a false flat all the way until the top of the pass above Elkhorn Hot Springs.
Admittedly I was touring and not riding at the pace those boys are  Wink

TD 2012 Day 5 show is up! Lots of calls today as Paul Gadola pulls out, Eric Foster recounts a bear stalking, Eszter Horanyi nearly pepper sprays Josh Shifferly, and later Josh takes a spill and pulls out but may try to get his bike fixed and continue after all!

riding at the pace those boys are  Wink
And it's quite a healthy pace by the looks of it.  Their dots are making it look easy!

The intent is there for Adam J and Estzer H to get to Butte tonight, so likely a re-group of 4.  Hopefully all the bikes in that bunch are good to go and none of them have to wait for the bike shop to open.  Or maybe, the Outdoorsman will be open at whatever hour for the racers ... that wouldn't surprise me.

And also plenty of intent and effort by JR and RC to get over Lava tonight, so maybe another bunch of 4 bivied in and around Basin tonight.

And T-Race, say it aint so, looks like some back and forth at the Priest Pass turn and now not taking the correct route?  Hope it's just a simple night-time navigational prob that will quickly be sorted out.

...looking further back into the race, DG and RB looking like they're riding together and into the night up high.  Either they find one of the old mining claim cabins around that area to hole up in, or we'll see how crazy they get with night riding.  Plenty of folks bedded in Lincoln, and wait, what's this, 3 riders pushing over Huckleberry Pass in the night, to make Lincoln still today?  Nice! And also one rider over Richmond Peak just now ... it's all downhill for an hour or so to make Seeley Lake and join the masses bedded there.  Plenty of healthy efforts all around!

I've been watching the 3 on their way to Lincoln as I know one of them (MF, SSer).  I figured he'd sleep at the foot and hit the climbs first thing.  If you look at his time plot he has been riding for going on 24 hrs after a ~3-4 break in Whitefish for some sort of repairs at the bike shop (riding ~40 of the last 44 hrs).  I can't imagine he won't stop in Lincoln but we'll see.  May just keep on going...

Any update on Tracey P, is she heading home to Idaho or just off course?
As a vet of the ride she should know the route?

Actually it looks like the second time back to the turn.

This has been so fun to follow this year. Having been out there last year it's so cool to know what they are riding through. I can see it like it was yesterday.

Yeah, she went back to the turn once, than back the wrong way, and is now back on track.  Something like 8 bonus miles round trip.  Really impressive that she's sticking with it this late in the night.  Must be highly motivated to make Helena ...

Looks like I was wrong on a few accounts, as there's Eric S and Garret P pushing past Basin now at 11:30p race time, to presumably make Butte tonight, or find a spot to bivy up the road.

Just talked to Adam. He's doing good with a few minor aches and a bum front shifter. Had a new rear one put on in Whitefish. New brake pads in Helena. Going to get some good sleep tonight at the motel in Butte and hit it again in the morning.

His stoke seemed pretty high.

giving props to my lady TP for sticking out the back and fourth confusion game...i bet she is just straight up tired and cant think straight. i have been there, not fun, but something to learn from and pushing through is very powerful. would have been easy to lay down totally whipped and figure it out in the morning, but that would hurt even more and she knows that.

these are times to be careful and really put yourself back together, nice job T i know sh will make Helena, fingers crossed...

I noticed Mark F has gone off the trail a couple of times, one time he had to backtrack a few miles, not sure if he left something behind or thought he had taken a wrong turn, either way he has been trying to catch the one SS rider in front of him and he is getting close. Go Mark!

I was there on Sunday. It is open. I mentioned the 90+ racers coming through and they were going to head to Dillion to get more supplies for them. So, racers will be able to pick up snacks + breaky/lunch/dinner/beer. Their motel is also open.

In 2008 that was were John Nobile made his second break (the one that stuck). A bunch of us stayed in Wise River while he and Geoff rode over the hill. Not easy to do while dog tired, but still one of the easier stretchs on the divide, even with the cracks before the climb starts proper.

Ollie and Craig are doing awesome. If they make it to Island Park tomorrow, that'd probably put them a full day ahead of the chasers (starting from Butte, it's hard to see any of them getting to Lima, but I'd happily be amazed!).
