Ollie to Abiquiu:  12:23:44

JP to Abiquiu:  12:11:02

Over a 12 hour lead and JP is still moving. Now into the tough climbing section that never ends!

Ollie to Cuba: 13:10:13

JP to Cuba: 13:03:49

Lead of around 6 1/2 hours but it is early in the day. The section between Cuba and Pie Town (the next way point) will roll by pretty fast.

Ollie made Pie Town in 15:04:43

It is around 207 miles from Cuba to Pie Town.

JP has around 49 hours to get to Pie Town to match Ollie's pace. Be interesting to see how big of push JP makes today and tonight. I am thinking he will get within 50 miles of Pie Town before he bivys.

Ollie to Pie Town: 14:09:44

JP to Pie Town:  14:02:44

7 hour lead. I think my calculations a few posts back were flawed. Never got good grades in math!!

It looks like JP went off course near Pie Town. Probably to pick up some new batteries??

Hopefully he can stock up with a lot of food. The next long stretch is storeless and brutal.
Once he gets through the CDT alternate is will be all "smooth sailing" to the end.

Any guesses as to finishing time?? I say he breaks the record by 6 hours.

And it appears to be pleasant and fast conditions: Temperature in the 70s (rather than in the 100s - I remember Southern NM as the worst part of my ride), only brief and light precipitation if any. With Ollie having had two more nights between where JP is now and AW (including one near the end in Lordsburg), my guess would be that the gap increases, possibly even 12 hours.

274 left; 137 to SC, 137 to AW, or something like that? It will be a hard push to make anything more than convenience store or grocery resupply in SC tonight. I know he would like Silver in his rear view when he calls it tonight, I just don't know the trail well enough that takes him there...rough & scrappy?

Rain and wind sound like they are taking a toll, too, but I am going to stay optimistic and suggest he hits the border tomorrow evening, taking at least 12 hours out of the standing record!

...he needs to have a near perfect ride to beat that number.

That would be true if he were trying to beat Ollie's time. However, the ethic of the race isn't to beat the current record, it is to cover the course as quickly as possible. I would be willing to bet that sub-14 days is possible. I'll know better once I've had a chance to ride it.

Right before Silver City is the CDT alt. which would be an real annoyance at night - ah, at least it will be cool. After the CDT alt, it's some easy paved roads to SC - there will be something open there, if not a Taco Bell and a convenience store. Roads after that are chill.

What's, "the Bottom of the Hill" Jay refers going to, for food near Pie Town? Bummer there's nothing to eat! No good hippies!

and Erik, I can't find your video! Is there a direct link?!

He didn't, but IIRC Jay strongly suggested he should have, so I would assume he would want to do it himself (it's a "purer" route)

Looks like an exciting finish. Either way some tough riders. I do have to give Ollie credit though. 16 days in his first try. It seems everyone gets faster each time they do it. Jay has done it 3 times?

And not that it matters as you can do the route anytime but talking with Matt Lee at the Brush mt lodge on route we thought that the snow conditions were probably some of the worst ever in Canada and north MT. So for Ollie to go so fast after hiking so much is really amazing. He had to have lost some serious time there comparing it to other years. Just luck of the draw there. I admit I'm a fan of Kiwis...

JP is up and moving. About 175 miles from finishing. He is through the tough Gila section. Once he gets the single track out of the way he should be flying. Finish up late tonight?? Can't wait for the waypoint reading in Silver City.

If you trust my calculations JP has to be into Silver City by around 8 PM tonight to match Ollie's pace. I think he gets in there by 1PM or so. I doubt he will do much more than nap until the end. 15 days 20 hours finish time??
