Using Google street view it looks like Cuba has a couple local restaurants and a McDonalds!   Not much to that little town.

Once again I'm curious as to what Eszther Horanyi will do. She'll be in Del Norte in less than an hour. Comfy bed or another 20-40 miles. Based on her choices thus far, she will resupply and continue on. This one is slightly tougher than previous choices in that services are significantly farther apart. Hmmm???

Katherine in her natural environment.

Andrew arrived from the South at the same time, he had the benefit of a 20mph tail wind.

Katherine would not have it so good.

A bigger problem is that she may have a dry bivy unless she can get beyond summitville to park creek. It's pretty dry north of indiana pass and a superfund site around summitville! I remember del Norte to indiana pass as a monster climb, but then I was pulling a BOB when I did it.

Is anybody else super impressed that Cjell is picking up places still as he comes closer to the finish.  Now sitting in ~6th, may pick up one more by the time he crosses the line.  I had thought he'd be losing ground vs those going south as they all push the last few hundred miles.

He would be much closer to the leaders if he hadn't hit those terrible headwinds when they had the same wind to their backs. He might have lost two days. South to north - a tactical error.

You could argue luck as well.  Could have been a 5mph wind instead of 30.

Calls tonight - Linda Davis called in from the Wise River Club to let riders know they have lodging, food services, and showers. If you are going to be later than 10p, you can call them and they will have meals set aside for you. 406.832.3258!

Serge called in from Horca. Excited about entering NM. Recaps last few days. Jarral Ryter called in from Del Norte. He’s feeling awesome and sounding good! Ollie Whalley called in from Cuba. Best breakfast burritos in Abiquiu! Recounts an awesome day.

Maybe. When Cjell started from the south, a friend who follows the race closely, told me that the wind would get him. Prophetic. There is always "next year" .... sometimes. Sorry Sue, your kid made a tactical error.  ;-)

Hammer products use soy as the protein source and the human body does not readily digest/absorb soy which is not what the Agriculture industry will have you believe.

I know that Devian Gilbert, aka Devo, attempted a Hammer liquid nutrition diet on his Divide attempt in 2010.  I think the reason he claims to have bailed was that he reached a state of "perma-bonk".  I remember him even describing falling asleep on the bike.  He seems to think that it was a lack of nutrition that got him there...

I'll see if I can get him to chime in here...

Yes the same Lon that did the tandem record ride with Pete. Once they got proper nutrition figured out their times dropped and their recovery times dropped. Also things like swollen legs when away.

Yes I agree on the TD it would be difficult.

I remember a guy named Lon Haldeman who won a number of RAAMs.  He ate can after can of spaghetti-Os.  Some people are just multi-fuel machines.

Food is a challange on this route---"ok at the Exxon station we need two lunches, a dinner, and a breakfast......thats 14 cheese n crackers, 20 slim jims, ten hershey bars....."

Thursday, 6/21/12, about 11:00am race time:

Had to drive to UT today and saw this on the way through the booming town of Hartsel Colorado. (wifey in background, hee hee)

Went inside the little bar & grill and found a happy Eric Schraufagel getting ready to eat some manly TDR food.  Yum, double cheeseburger, Strawberry milk shack and check out those fries.

Eric is still feeling the effects of some breathing issues. He voice is a little rough from a lot of coughing.  However he said he is feeling much better.  To me he seemed to be in excellent spirits looked ready to make up a bit of lost time.  Even with the bothersome med issues Eric is putting down some impressive miles!!!

Go Eric S.

A bit later while driving from Breckenridge to Frisco we saw a racer cruising up the bike path.  I can not be 100% but I think is was Katherine Wallace.  No chance to snap a picture, shout out or say hi but the racer I glimpsed looked calm, relaxed but was riding with intent.

Go Katherine W.

Can someone tell me where I can get the kml file to use with Google Earth?

TIA

To get to the next level of detail, download the .GPX track and manipulate it in a GPS software program like Topofusion Pro. You can always get the KML file and play with it in Google Earth.

Start with the GPS track here:  http://topofusion.com/divide/gps.php

You have a number of options using the GPX track.

1.  open in topofusion, save as .kml
2.  open directly in google earth.  Sometimes this works, sometimes not...
3.  convert the GPX file to KML format using http://gpsvisualizer.com/

One of those options should get what you need.

From Gaye Hoeflich (whom I don't know) - Posted on Tom Thomas' Facebook page.  Thought it would be best to put the request here too.

Hi,  has anyone seen Scott Andrews from Telluride, CO? His transponder stopped working 6/9, but we know that he was past Pinedale on Wednesday 6/20. We're trying to track via calls every few days and would appreciate any additional information. His California Family & Friends.

Tom Thomas :
Lives in Redding, California, a secret recreation mecca. 57 years young. Tom took up endurance events, mostly adventure racing, as a mid life passion. He has formed and competed with several PrimalQuest teams.  He organizes a regional group to promote and host events called SOAR, Shasta Orienteering and Adventure Racing http://www.teamsoar.net/

His Bio from the SOAR site :

Occupation: Anesthesiologist
Favorite Events: 24 hour to expedition length races
Favorite Disciplines: Navigation; Trekking
Favorite Race Food: Anything I have in my pack on day 6
Favorite Races: Primal Quest Utah 2006, my first expedition race; 2009 Mother Lode Expedition Race, an expedition race win
Race Experience: 2001 Gorge Games 24 Hour AR; 2006 Primal Quest Utah; Mountain Adventure Race-Montana 2007; 2008 Primal Quest Montana; 2009 Primal Quest South Dakota; 2009 Mother Lode Expedition; 2010 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race-Chile; 2010 XPD Australia; 2010 National Championships Moab; Many sprint to 24 hour races throughout California

Once he heard about the Divide Ride he started planning the possibilities - Biking much more, a new 29er hardtail and then Tom did the most difficult part: convince 17 other anesthesiologists to part with coveted summer vacation weeks. He predicted finishing in 25 days, and he has a very stable pace toward that goal. He is a VERY friendly, social guy and it isn't surprising to see him hang with the tag team of four riders he is riding close to. Several of his nearby trailmates predicted 20-25 day rides, so he is in well prepared company. He has incredible stamina and wears down the youngsters "after a few days". Tom has an innate navigational, topographical ability.  His hospital coworkers are tracking his progress and preparing the break room for his recovery.

I know there have been some late nights and some early mornings, but has anyone ridden ALL night yet?
I guess our leaders are proving you don't have to...?

Was up north of Steamboat again today for some MTB'ing and fishing and cheered on Max Morris as he rode by.  He saw me in the middle of the river, smiled and yelled "I'm going to Mexico!!!"  These unintentional run-ins are pretty fun.  I guess that's part of the kicks of being on route!! Smiley

Kudos to Tracy Burge for fighting the good fight.  She started the race with a nasty stomach virus she caught on the ride to Banff and she was never really healthy after that.  She battled back from a 2-day stop in Whitefish to get her protein levels back up, edema in her legs down and IT band within a tolerable level of pain.  She rallied for a while, but after leaving Butte, found herself suffering from dehydration, facial numbness, nausea, and the sense to know she needed to stop and take care of herself.  Tracy's tolerance level for pain is off the charts (she has no ACL in one knee, but you'd never know it to watch her adventure race), and she'd been living/eating/breathing this race for months and months.  For her to pull out, she must really be suffering.  Huge thanks to all those folks who showed her compassion along the way.  It's part of what the race was about for her, and we'll look forward to hearing her recount your many kindnesses when she gets back home.  Rest assured she'll remember them for years to come.  We continue to cheer on Sara Dallman, who lives just a few miles from Tracy back in Ohio and was her training partner for the TD.  She'll be heartbroken to hear that Tracy had to stop, but she's got a steely-eyed focus on that finish line.  She had a monster day today in order to make Pinedale.  She's built for endurance, and she's just hitting her stride, it seems.  All the best to everyone out there.
