Luke Bush called in from his finish at 11:50am. Marian Penso called in from her finish. James Hodges called in from Pie Town. He’s been battling thorns. And Stephen Huddle called in from Togwatee Lodge. He is on a detour due to grizzly activity. Rd. 30040 has been closed. This is all likely in response to a fatal grizzly attack in Yellowstone back on Wednesday. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes! |

FR 30040 from mile 42.9 to the Togwotee lodge has been closed due to bear activity.
Just went up 287 and am at the lodge drowning my sorrows with a coke.
Now that truly is a bummer. FR 30040 is a short 4-mile segment that is super close to, and parallels, Hwy 287 to the lodge. To miss out on a potential GC qualifying ride for a closure of that short a segment makes me want to shed a tear for Stephen. Hopefully the coke helped with a smile. Enjoy the upcoming snow, however much of it is left. |

A 4-mile segment may not disqualify his ride, depending on TD Admin ruling. It could be viewed as "non-material" to the result (kind of like being forced to ride a car through a construction zone). |

Yeah, good point. Perhaps add 10 to 20 mins to the overall finish time (something like 6 to 8mph climb on hwy versus 4 to 6mph on adjacent dirt/mud)? What's more ironic, if you will, is where Stephen spent the night (or slept a little) last night ...Ashton-Flagg Ranch Rd / Lake of the Wood / S. Yellowstone Border ... which to me has higher likelihood of closure for this sort of "bear activity". Go figure. |

Yep. I was wondering if he would ride through or bivy up there. I slept on Ashton/Flagg last year and was pretty uneasy. Hung my camel bak and snacks in a tree about 100 yards across the road. That area is infested with bears. The FR closure he detoured is a pretty quick trip but the road can be pretty muddy coming up to Togwotee Lodge. It is pretty insignificant, being so short over 2745mi. Stephen has a good ride going. Made good time the last couple days. |

No actual cutoff. From the Rules: "There is no finish time cut-off, however, current convention considers a competitive Divide Route finish time as within approximately 50% of record time for men, and 30% of record time for women. Currently this = 27days (100mi/day) for men, and 31days (90mi/day) for women." |

It made sense that I should try some events closer to home however, so I signed up for TNGA '11 and have been training in earnest. I swallowed a huge slice of humble pie this week as I went down to Georgia to scout out the first 40 miles of the route ... it's EPIC !!! At first, I wondered if the "56,000 feet of climbing over 350 miles" was a bit of an overstatement. Let's just say I no longer have any doubts. The route is filled with creek crossings, rocks, ruts, mud, loose gravel, logs, sticks, slow climbs and descents that will eat your lunch if you're not careful. Heck, there's even a creek that IS the road !!! (see pic below) I can't wait to be chewed up and spit out ... hopefully in one piece. Wish this "rookie" luck ... I'm going to need it I'll attach a few photos ... |

And Mulberry Gap Campground is ground central and a must stop for hospitality too. It's at the start of about the last third of the course and by the time you get there you'll want a shower and some food. It's an epic route. The lower Appalachians have a lot of climbing. The mountains aren't as big as the Rockies but you get a lot of ups and downs so the climbs add up and the feet per mile are high. And don't forget the Colorado Trail Race kicks off Monday, August 1st, 2011! So there's plenty of bikepacking to go this summer. |

I am broke. I don't really like to travel, except by bike. Hoping to do some closer stuff this season, but nothing that far away. That being said I love checking out new stuff, someday maybe....

Cheering for Nick Kennedy who just graduated from Texas A&M in May. He is at the back of the pack but still going! He is 22 years old. Is he the youngest to ever tackle/complete the TD?
