Denis Chezelle called in his finish. Jon Pettit called in with his finish. And Justin Simoni called in from Grants. New Mexico ate his pedal too.

As another fund raiser idea for Linnaea: I'd think there are many people like me that'd be willing to pay good money to be able to talk to or have a question and answer session with some of the TD's bigger names such as Matt, Kurt, Jefe, Deejay, or Justin. I know I'd be willing to put in a benjamin to have that sort of opportunity. Not sure how to handle the forum such as a call, VTC, email, or even in person lunch opportunity, but it seems like we could figure that part out case by case. Perhaps make it an auction or raffle, or something like that. Anyone have any thoughts or alternate idea's on this?

ITT-Divide

An Individual Time Trial (ITT) is the earliest form of Divide racing. Although perhaps less dramatic than group starts, an ITT blitz of the GDMBR is no less difficult or worthy of documentation.

I would say that a "true" ITT (alone) of the TD route is more difficult than the Grand depart. Your motivation comes from within, not from others.

If there were enough interest it would be possible to do a conference call. Each person gets a pin to join the call and perhaps someone to moderate. The biggest issue would be getting everyone together at one time.

Someone pointed out this Pinkbike piece on the race from Devon Balet. It was always good to see him out on the course, nice to see it being appreciated by the PB crowd too.

I see that Jackie Bonn is listed as a scratch, but she was so close. Does anyone know what happened?

Hey Rolling Recluse
Sleep is no excuse, keep drinking java juice
and riding like Zeus to stay out of the caboose
Sprinting through the blue spruce, like an avalanche let loose
Legs take the abuse cause there ain’t no flag of truce
just the honking of the goose and the applause of the moose

I was wondering the same thing.  I know she took a longer than usual break after riding through the fire portion (that others were routed around) - I wonder if she came out of that stretch sick.  I was really pulling for her knowing that she got a really bad break and would have been better off is she was traveling a little slower.  I guess that is all part of the unknown of the TD.  Hopefully she will update us when she gets the chance.  AMAZING and courageous ride by Jackie, for sure!!!

Sad news, Cricket has just notified me that she has had to withdraw from the Tour Divide due to medical issues. Please read the email I received a short time ago:

Baker -
I am out.  My knees problem got a lot worst yesterday after leaving Butte and today they are so swollen I can not bend them.  It took me 6 hours to get from Wise River to High Country Lodge in Polaris.  I sent Stephen on his way - He knew I had been hurting for days when I was unable to keep pace with him but I kept going and said little about it - just really thought I could push through it and they would get better.  Today though, the pain was so bad I threw up.  I had to walk as I could not even coast the hills - I could notput any weight on them - then I figured out I could sit and take all the weight off the legs and coast the hills - but I could not clip in as I could not twist my feet.  I should have called it at Wise River but I wanted to see this section and wanted to get to Russ under my own power - as I did.

I am really fine with it all - other than the knees I feel really strong physically and mentally and the bike is doing great and I KNOW that record could have been crushed this year.  But the miles started backing off because of the knees.   Homers record will stand another year because I am getting old ;(  Not meant to be!

I am staying here tonight - no cell phone - and then trying to get back to Butte .  I just sent Rick Smith an email to let him know what was happening.  It is always good having friends everywhere.  I will call you as soon as I can - you can email as I can check them on their computer

Oh no - so sorry to hear about Jackie and Cricket!  I had started watching Jackie after Tori finished.  Last time I checked yesterday, she was at mile 2480 and moving at 10mph, but it looks like she only went 3 more miles after that.  Great ride, Jackie!

I am heading to my place near Magdalena NM from California.  If any riders abandoning the race are in need of assistance (transportation) in the area between Grants and Beaverhead I will be going through sometime tomorrow (Thursday 7/7).  I am driving a pick up so plenty of room for a bike and I don't mind taking a detour to ABQ if a ride to the airport is needed.  If interested I will be checking in while I am on the road so send a message.

Wishing all the best and speedy knee recovery to Cricket!  I'm sure she is extremely frustrated and disappointed right now.  This race sure does require so many things to go right in order to finish.

That climb out of Wise River to Polaris is a miserable one if you're not feeling it. I know I had one of my bad days on it.

I want to take this opportunity express my gratitude for the incredible support that Linnaea and I have received from the TD community.  The generosity of countless strangers, both financial and emotional is truly overwhelming and so many of you have clearly held Dave in your thoughts in this past month.  I have not been able to follow the race this year, and this is the first time that I have logged onto this forum, but you have not been far from my mind.

I cherished the opportunity to meet a few racers, and of course Kirsten at the Brush Mountain Lodge last week.  I felt Dave’s presence in that valley in Colorado as strongly as any other place that I have been.  One of the hardest things for me this year has been the knowledge that an entire community exists that has mourned Dave’s passing with which I have had little connection.  I feel that in the last weeks, I have been able to remedy that just a little.  To know that Dave spent his last days doing something he loved as part of this community brings me some solace.  Though I am no racer, the route calls to me, as it did Dave, and who knows, perhaps some day Linnaea and I will ride it together.

Peace to you all.
