Looks like PA missed a turn near Holland Lake.  icon_scratch

Joe, I'm not seeing the call in from Jefe on mtbcast.  Am I missing something?

Kurt's dad again...

Just got a call from Caroline Soong.  She and several other riders (Lance & Lucas, at least) were climbing to Marshall Pass south of Salida and were turned back due to a route closure from an apparent fresh fire somewhere ahead near the pass.  She said they are considering detouring via Monarch Pass using US 50.  But they are worried about being disqualified if they use the detour.  They don't know anything about the size of the fire, or if the route might be reopened soon.  They're trying to check with the local authorities (they have returned to Poncha Springs) for more information on the fire and the closure.

What is the "proper" course of action to take when riders encounter an unexpected route closure like this?  Do they risk being relegated if they go off route without prior approval?  And who should they be contacting for advice and approval?

Me thinks Jefe is closing in to Kurt - rest+ss vs. unrest+gears? Anyway, thrilling.
Go, go , go -  all you Tour Divide racers
All depends if Jefe is in the mood for pie right now ...

sorry, martin, but i didn't/don't have your spot!...hope it finds you!
ride safely!

I think I'm the one that started that rumor about Martins' SPOT.  So strange that it's not with you, Kirsten, because as of Thursday morning, when you click on his name, it show's he's sitting at mile 1447.  Maybe the postman hid it behind the bushes somewhere...I'm just catching up on today's posts, so maybe the mystery has been solved in the meantime.  Thanks for the pic's of the crew on Wednesday night!  Everyone looks like they're having a great time.

Hopefully ML can answer this? I have an opinion myself but dare not mention it. Could you imagine? Blabbing on about a rule and getting a whole pack of riders relegated because you didn't know what you were talking about!

Ron,

Yeah I just got a call from her as well. It's kinda choppy but she mentions the detour. I'll see if I can reach Matthew.

I don't think that anyone is in danger of being relegated over this. Kurt's dad is asking a fair question, and the riders are being honest and just trying to figure out what to do. This entire TD has been all about reroutes, both planned and last-minute.

That's probably true. I know one thing... the official word will not be to ignore the closure and press on.

The goal when unexpected detours are required is, to the best of the riders judgment, to take the reroute that results in the soonest (safe/legal) return to the main route. In the case of this O`Haver Lake Campground fire, taking Hwy 50 does result in the soonest resumption. It's unfortunate those affected must take 50 as it's pretty darn sketchy, but there's no telling how long it will take for Marshall to open back up. It's a shame the dim-wit responsible couldn't wait 30 more minutes, and none of the riders would have been affected. Such is life on the Divide. Mother Nature levies another schism in the peloton.

The report from firefighters is the fire is small, but not yet contained. They have not requested back-up yet. Danny Hill's blue dot is pinned to the site of closure, so perhaps they have given him hope he'll be able to pass soon. Not sure. Two riders squeaked past just prior to closure.

The plan for those riders that follow in coming days is to require the main route if it's back open. The time penalty already felt by those affected more than makes up for the pavement detour, plus the pave amounts to nearly 1k feet more climbing, so it's probably a wash.

Looks like he's retreating. I hope he's OK. Anyone know where he might resupply if that is his issue?

Dejay Birtch called in from Sargents sounding a little more spry.
You can get the audio here, via RSS,  or on iTunes!

Someone really needs to take some of Dejay's mtbcast quotes and mix them into a song like the Antoine Dodson Bed Intruder Song. The only hard part would be trying to pick his best quotes!

Traditionally, I take calls like that and put together a montage at the end of the tour. Look forward to Dejay being prominently represented.

There is a restaurant that serves MASSIVE steak dinners at the end of the steep climb/beginning of Union Pass road that may/may not be open. If it's not he has a downhill run to the hwy where there are a few stores. Hope he's ok.

Dave Bruno called in from Grants. Caroline Soong called in from near Marshall Pass. She mentions the fire up there and the re-route. The call breaks up a little. And Jon Pettit called in from Steamboat Springs.

Not a new reroute situation, but not to worry. The first release of the Detours GPS track omitted that segment down low along Holland Lake due to an exaggerated snow report. Track was then updated, to include it. It's utterly gorgeous in there. So, Paul may not have input that edit. He will not be penalized. In the meantime (since Sobos passed) we received notice from Fish/Wildlife that the segment was 'closed last week due to active bear trapping'. One wild and crazy year on course. It's been quite a headache. Payback, I guess, for all the years i 'organized' and had too much fun racing, too.
