Shimano Dynamo Hub for TD13, now what?

So through a series of fortunate events, I'm going to receive a shimano dynamo hub.  I think it fits everything I need for my bike so yay...except, well, now what.  Has anyone used one of these things and what was your experience? I've tried two perpetual motion generators before and had lackluster results, I'm hoping shimano hub pulls through.

now to figure out what to plug into it.  thoughts? anyone?

Yeah, ouch. But great device if you have a diverse range of stuff to recharge for extended trips. So much power out of the hub, seems such a waste to only use it for LED lights.

I hear you.  It'd be for a light, iphone and gps.  but mainly lights.  for the LED lights, are you talking about shimano's version or is there an alternative?

I have the son hub and an eDeluxe light on my rando rig. Absolutely love it. For a TD light I was considering a supervnova. Different spread than the more road worthy eDeluxe.

Do a search for Peter White in New Hampshire. Tons of lighting info and charging info.

Scott - I ran the Shim Dynamo last year and this year on TD. This year I ran it with Supernova E3 light and the Pedal Power Plus AC to DC with USB output. Flawless performance. If you are going to carry gadgets this set up will work for you. I ran my GPS off the hub and NEVER changed my batteries -- and at night when I went to sleep I'd recharged my supplemental Cygolight USB rechargeable headlamp from the Pedal Power's battery pack.

I also have an OLD DeLorme PN20 that will run from the hub. It however, has a significant battery draw and I still need to swap batteries about every other day during an ultra style event. This is better than every day without the hub, I guess.

This battery consumption is the main reason I switched to the Garmin.

cool. my wife got me one last holiday season.
so you run rechargeable batteries in it, and plug it into the electronics feeding off the hub?
or when its plugged into USB does it bypass the batteries and run strictly off the hub?

For the Garmin, when you plug in the USB cable from the hub, the batteries are bypassed. When you stop pedaling the GPS starts to draw from the batteries again. So there is no interruption in the device's performance or function. Based on how efficient the Etrex is, and being mindful to shut the unit off when I went to eat and go to sleep, I never needed to swap out a set due to their use in "stopped" time.

The DeLorme, on the other hand, has a proprietary Lithium battery option that will charge while you pedal ($45 dollars for the battery). But I found that you typically stop enough to use it faster than you can charge it. So, you end up needing to swap batteries in that unit. If running NiCad rechargeable or disposable batteries that unit will act as the Garmin does.

Keep in mind that with the cable plugged in the water resistance of the Garmin is compromised. The DeLorme has a plug that is water tight and is of no concern. So be mindful in extreme wet conditions and creek crossing.

I'm currently using a SON28 with a B&M light and Biologic Reecharge.  It keeps my iPhone going for a decent amount of time.

I'm using his stuff at the moment and it is excellent.

I charge AA's from the dynamo hub and can use them in the etrex if needed, but the AA pack also powers a helmet light. There is an adaptor that converts the AA's to give USB out so I can also charge mobile phones etc with them.

So charge batteries all day. Dynamo bar light at night plus run the helmet light off them at night (it will last about 10-12 hours). Charge gadgets when I stop for the night with what is left in the AA batteries. Repeat.

This is what I'll be running shortly with the new 15mm thru-axle hub from SON28.

The new revo is a fantastic light, I know as rob dean and I designed it, it's based on the boost circuit we use at kLite, to get 800lm, but what's different from everybody else is in the kLite micro and revo is the stand lite switcher circuit and low speed circuit...more power down low and when stoped stays lit for up to 1h.... For kLite I use 3 LEDs and revo 4, mine is 'micro' in size, the revo is about 30lm brighter as same power to 4 LEDs gives a bit more than 3, stand lite a bit brighter as well, but revo quite a bit larger, so if your really pushed for bar space, the 'micro' a better option, micro also has USB integration, and AA charging options...

If your racing and want a compact setup that's simple and bright go the revo, if you are going to the end of the world and back and need to charge everything and anything, from your hub, you will do no better than kLite and SP on price, size and weight.
