3 - The start - I can't imagine not riding away from the border, so my vote would be the 6 mile out n back from the pass as Scott detailed. Any other thoughts from AZTRers?

Sounds good.  The consensus is to do the ride to the border, as laid out on the GPS track.

The neutral start makes sense, or at least regroup a bit at the start of the 300.  Note that there is a bit of singletrack (it's on the GPX) that is a shortcut over to the start of the 300.  It's all road to there though.

5 - Detours - remind me what the detour rules/etiquette are?

I think the only way to be fair is to say now that all the snow detours, as shown in the GPX, are fine.  But they are optional.  If conditions look good and you want to stick with the route, go for it!  More power to you.

SPOTS - AZTR racers you have two options to get your SPOT:

1) Come by my house in Tucson Thursday (or earlier)

2) Pick it up at the Parker Lake trailhead (start of the 300) Friday morning.

I will not be in Sierra Vista, nor will I be at the Mexican border for the start.  You'll have to start yourselves there, and note the exact start time.

Remember to bring 2AA lithium batteries!

Best of luck to the racers!
Scott, I really like the writeup on the AZT trackleader page.

Currently snowing at 7000 feet in Flagstaff and starting to settle! Thanks for all the offers of lifts etc, I'll text people tonight when I've charged my phone.

Riding to the start from Sierra Vista - I think most of us will be at the Motel 6 so we could meet there thurs pm or fri am. Scott guesstimates 20 miles and at least a couple of hours riding (it's mostly uphill!) from there to the border - was everyone in for the full AZT planning on doing that? We'll have to be off around 4 for a 6.30 border photocall!
