Neil Beltchenko at bikepackersmagazine.com asked me to do write up a blog about it.  Since I will not be able to make it to the group start, maybe someone else can do a write up for him?  neil@bikepackersmagazine.com

I've always wanted to write a trip report about one of my bikepacking trips, but I've been too dang lazy to muster up the desire after every trip. This may be just the motivation I need to finally get off of my butt and write a trip report. I'd be more than happy to take this assignment on (assuming the Dixie 200 lets me finish that is...).

The SPOT tracker is up: http://trackleaders.com/dixie14

Weather looks perfect, somewhere between 40 and 87 depending on elevation and time of day.

See you tomorrow evening about 1/4 mi up 2nd Lefthand Canyon!

I'm running a little behind leaving Phoenix, but I should be there around 10:30 p.m. tonight.

I will be there one way or another with a few cold beers to enjoy with the remaining field of 4 (plus Dave) tomorrow evening.
...bring some wine for Linda Wink

have fun out there all you who will make it!!
it is a fantastic ride!

Erin...bummer, but a fall ITT with the changing colors might be spectacular.
Mark, enjoy the ride and I look forward to your write up.
Steve. push hard like last year and bring it all the way through.
plesurnpain - no better way to baptize a frame. I did the same on the Stagecoach 400 last year.

I'll be watching the dots and remembering the fun. In between work that is.
Ride hard - Jeremy

With a very heavy heart, I will not be making it out for the Saturday start this year.  Life got the better of me this week.  I found earlier this week that my good friend who has a rare form of leukemia went from treatable to terminal, so I traveled across the country to visit him and I am now behind on work and just mentally spent in general.  I hope to come out as early as possible for an ITT on this course, because I don't want to wait until next year to ride it.  It is obvious Dave really put a lot of effort into it.  I hope you all have a great time and I look forward to the trip reports.
Erin, Keep me posted. I would love to join you on an ITT, if I can get my knee issue straitened out.

They're off!

From left to right,

Scott. Super excited to be on a warranty frame he received yesterday. He's got a spot but is not showing on the tracker. I hope he knows how to put it in tracking mode...

Josh. Nicely kitted bike, he is racing.

Mark. Arrived ~11pm last night, he's the only guy from out of state. Not planning on a lot of night riding, too many views he needs to capture.

Steve. This is his 3rd time, he has yet to finish. 3rd time is a charm, right? He said he will do it every year, forever. I'll ask him about that in a few days Wink

So far looks like a horse race, Josh and Steve are pretty close. Don't know where Scott is though, if his riding is akin to his excitement he's already on the Paunsaugunt Wink

I just got wind of another racer that started a day early. He's using a SPOT but not trackleaders/bluedot. His SPOT tracker is here: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0Lqv7PaRMqJQMdDI0G6Sd5pRvqkdc7KcN

It looks like he is set to finish in a few hours with a total time of under 40 hours. That is ~ 10 hours less than the current FKT. Steve and Josh are racing a ghost, maybe they will figure it out by Rich's tracks in front of them.

Sure wish I was in that photo...and riding...
nice pace by Steve and Josh. good work fellas.

The ghost rider in the front looks to be off track for the most part. Following roads and such. Although he now gets the joy of lumberjack-a-bike on the spruce trail

Blake, if I can get my work priorities under control, I plan to head out June 26 for an early morning June 27 start.

That is probably too quick for your knee to heal, but I would like to get on this route before I get fat and lazy which usually happens to me during summer months when it is too hot to ride around here.  Looks like its going to be a close call between Josh and Steve.  Fun to watch.

VRRT sure is a hard place for spots to get through. I don't think I've ever seen a clear spot track on that trail.

Nice catch on the Reed's ghost track, he sure is skipping trails. Probably has a hard time limit and is cursing me right about now...ah Spruce trail love.

Great ride so far by Josh and Steve, will be fun to see how it plays out. Both are going for it.

Bummer sorry to hear that. Fastest way out is 12 West to 143 North, goes right to the start. Hitchhike if the knee is shot.

Steve and Josh are doing great rides! Steve is riding like a man on a mission - he's roughly 2.5 hours ahead of last years pace. Josh should be slightly more rested, will that help him tackle the Markagunt bookend faster than Steve this evening?

The definition of a good race is interleaving traces on the Trackleaders race flow chart, this might be the first time for the Dixie Wink

Some of those drainage crossings below the cliffs are super treacherous!

Sorry to hear that Josh. You were having a great ride. Knees were tough this year. Let's get together and ride sometime.
Steve looks like he's killing it. Hope he can keep it up to the finish.

Word on the street is the burger barn is open for business and that happens to be where Steve is paused. Dang he's had great timing so far. Just a little lumbertrack Spruce trail and Dark Hollow and he's done. He could be done by dark if he's super motivated. That's moving.

Steve is in the thick of it right now...but will see the light of day soon. He'll be at his car with daylight to spare.

Impressive ride thumbsup
