Man that was really cool. Doing the divide kinda made me never want to race bikes again, but this thing has me all excited. Great trail, great riding, great views.

Was out riding 10 Mile today with Teresa Garcia and we ran into "Geek on a Bike", Mike Kunneke.  Mike looked full of energy as he told us that he believed he was the DFL finisher for the 2015 CTR!!!  He shared his wisdom with us.  For example, "Don't ride at night and you won't need a dynamo hub".  "Don't ride with gears and your shifter won't break".  Bwahahaha!  Good advise!!! We got to wish him well and he let us snap some photos with him.

Go Mike go!!!!!!!!

Thanks SO MUCH for giving MK's dot a face.  I've been on Team Geek for a while, but I had no idea what he looked like.  Go, Mike!  And to everyone else out there:  We're still cheering for you!  You can do it!  Go, go, go!

Got to meet and spend a bit of time visiting with Mike during the AZTR this year up on Mt. Lemmon, great guy, great personality, and like most bikepackers I meet, a real character. Glad you're keeping it rolling Mike! Watching your SPOT daily... GO GO GO!

I met him at one of the worst days (muddy, rain) in one of the worst segments (Sargents' cow poop area). But, hey, both older guys finished (and he still has 10 years on me and I had 29 more gears)...

First part of my ride report is up here: http://rolandsturm.blogspot.com/2015/08/colorado-trail-first-days.html

Hello,

Maybe a little bit too early but any idea when the start date for the 2016 CTR will be fixed? I am asking because due to different reasons my wife has to tell her boss the rough date for the summer vacation next year. As it happened kids will be out of school at the same time. So we are roughly plan to spend our summer vacation in Colorado and I would like to participate at the CTR  icon_biggrin
If I compare the start dates of the past years I guess it will be around the 7th of August?? And the direction would be from Denver to Durango right?
Thanks!

I believe the organizers try to set it up around the time of the full moon but that probably won't happen in 2016 since the full moon schedule is July 19 and Aug 18, so they will have to chime in.  And, it will be southbound in 2016 (Den - Durango).  In years past, however, the start date wasn't posted on the website until around Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb so it may not be set for a while.

I was looking at lunar cycles for next year just a couple days ago. I could see a potential July 17th start. Long ways away yet.

If we get the huge winter I'm expecting down this way, I wouldn't count on riding high country until at least the middle of July, in some places...

I was looking at the predicted el nino forecasting too. Looks like you guys are in for a big dump down there this year. Good for the 2 plankers, snow boarders and fat bikes I guess.

Yes the indicators are starting to show, and yes we really need el nino to come back. Things are starting to look ugly water wise down here. However another el nino like 97/98 could do wonders.

I hope to do the CTR as well next year, but the date is an issue.  Tried two years ago, but had to bail for a variety of reasons.  I'm looking to get even next year.  Assuming you guys don't completely get dumped on, I would put my vote in for a mid to late July start.

I don´t know exactly how they decide when to start, but I think after the mid´s of July it would match with a full moon week.
