Joe Grant's starting on his new Reeb setup. Grant's known as an ultra runner here in Boulder, so it should be interesting for blokes like me to see how he transitions to something like the CTR. His rig looks very TD worthy:

For myself, I'm prepared as I can be and excited to push myself as hard as i can to make it to Junction Creek on Thursday.

What!? Are you starting from Denver? Or have you been doing all your planning backwards ;-)

On the whole spectator thing...

It can get a little creepy when you're riding down a dirt road at night, a truck passes you, and then skids to a stop up ahead and a couple of people jump out. The immediate thought that comes to mind: "Are they superfans or are they about to knock you off your bike and steal it?" That sort of thing has happened to me more than a few times on the Divide. It's less likely on the CT, but I think as long as people want to come out and cheer, that's fine. They just should be careful not to do anything to spook racers (as Matt says, the mental state can be a bit tenuous at times) and shouldn't expect racers to necessarily do anything more than nod as they pass.

Grant's known as a really fast ultrarunner everywhere else. Smiley

I didn't know he was riding the CTR. I do know he's running UTMB at the end of August. Should be an interesting transition, and fun spectating.

I was lucky enough to catch sight of quite a few TD racers this year in the course of my regular life but I left them alone. I figure it's bad karma to slow or distract a racer by approaching them.

He's not playing around. That rig looks very light.

Carbon drive. Interesting choice.

Do you have a link to somewhere with more info on the bike?

Just FYI for the racers: We'll have a gift pack for the racer caller drawing for the CTR too, as with the other races this year. So call in at least once! 888-866-4491. I didn't get stickers sent out in time, my bad. Most are familiar with the number from past races, I hope. There'll be ProGold lube items, a SOL Bivvy, and other items in the pack. 1 call you're in, the more the better your chances! Be safe!

I'm beginning to think that the whole public internet facing spot tracking is a pretty bad idea. It's kind of against the spirit of a couple of the race rules and I'm concerned about potential safety issues. I haven't heard of any major incidents happening, but I've seen some things this year that I found to be a bit unsettling.

Well, you really don't have to sign up on trackleaders if you don't want to. That is entirely a racer decision.

Although, in the interest of keeping trackleaders going (because it rocks!), you should sign up  icon_biggrin

I wish I could watch all the excitement but this year I will be busy pushing my bike up a hill in the race.  I hope my blue dot will create some interest.  I figure the leaders will finish before I get to BV.  I should be easy to spot near the back of the pack. Probably "CD" Let me make my pre excuses now.  Just remember I'm 53 years old, a rookie, and I have a "no training policy".  I'm not in great shape (I prefer the term "well rested") I'm not racing anybody.  It's about me and the adventure.  I think I'll get plenty of that.

Have you been camping out at the trail head the last couple days? That's some dedication!

Funny!  I just checked the Spot there.  Next time I'm not going to arrive so early and shuttle etc. too much time waiting around and doubting gear, food etc.

Just saw everyone off.  Started here at the shop at 4am, rode with everyone to the trailhead.  Kurt, Kaitlyn, Jesse, Jefe, JayP, and Schiff are all looking light and fast.  There were a lot more riders than I anticipated this year!  Should be an exciting one to watch, even though I think I'd rather be out there for a third run...

The one thing that's making me glad to stay home this year is the weather forecast for today - 80% chance of thunderstorms all day in the La Platas and beyond.  The first day is going to be wet!

Tried to take some photos but my camera didn't do well with the lack of light.  Will probably head up to Kennebec this morning to see some people come through.  (Sorry Schiff! Smiley )

More later.

I am back in Durango with a bent derailer.
Looks like velorution and mountain bike specialist are closed today.
I was hoping to get back on the trail today.

I camped up on Kennebec pass last night to catch the riders as they passed by this morning. The weather was mostly cloudy and raining on and off. Temps were in the 60's. Everyone seemed fresh and stoked.

Jesse came over the top first
