How's that Oware bivy hold up in the rain? I've worked for Outwardbound in the past. They supply our tarps, gators, and some other stuff. I like the construction.
I've not used it hard rain, I carry a small GoLite tarp that I get under when the rain comes in, so I can't really speak to it's direct rain performance. I'm not surprised Outwardbound uses their stuff, it's bomber and still looks new after 2 seasons.

If you were compiling the ideal soundtrack for CTR, what songs would HAVE to be on it and why?  I'm constructing a playlist for my training (not sure I'll bring music with me tho on CTR). But for training, might be nice to have a little something to help keep me in the rhythm or to motivate.

A few songs come to mind along a certain theme of keeping moving:
I Still Can't Stop by Flux Pavilion (if yer into dubstep)
Bullet Train by Stephen Swartz (feat. Joni Fatora) (... can't stop this bullet train ...)
Sure Shot by Beastie Boys ('cuz you can't and you won't and you don't stop ...')

I like full albums. I'll listen to the full Rush catalog in order from beginning to end, for example. Keeps me going on multiple levels - musically, lyrically, and interested as the music evolves over time. I've used the same trick with Joe Satriani, AC/DC, and others depending on my mood, motivational needs, or length of ride.

Listened to this a lot on the AZT this year and lots of Lemon Jelly. Great stuff to trance out to night riding. Nice suggestion.

I had all of Russian Circles albums going for AZT also. I'm from Chicago originally as are they so I listen to them a lot. Used to record some of their live shows.

Nice suggestions. I made a mix with some of your recs for my Kokopelli ride yesterday. It really does help you get through some of the mentally challenging parts. My fav for the day was Turn Down For What!!

Ha! I'm not sure about prog metal, but for the AZT300, I had a most excellent mix of Nitro/Noise, Wumpscut, The Retrosic, Red Cell, In Flames, Die Sektor, Aesthetic Perfection, Chrysalide, and Blutengel. I should have skipped the Blutengel, but the rest was so perfect.

Just a reminder to everyone that it's not a bad idea to pick up a Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue (CORSAR) card before adventuring in the Colorado backcountry. It's cheap(only 3$) and helps offset the (non-medical) costs of a S&R deployment.

Cheers all.

Well dang, Kurt, I'm not familiar with any of those bands besides In Flames.  Will have to check some of them out.  I listen to a lot of BTBAM, August Burns Red, A Life Once Lost, Star F**cking Hipsters, Operation Ivy, No Cash, The Chariot, and lots more.

I don't take music on bike rides - even really long ones - but that could because I have a constant soundtrack running through my head.  Always have.  Problem is, I generally can't choose the song.  I remember racing XC as a teenager in the '90s and really, really wishing that "Another One Bites The Dust" would get the hell out of my head.  ARRRG!

Russian Circles is a definite yes. I really don't like to listen to heavy/fast stuff when I'm riding. Usually if I listen to metal it's doom/sludge/stoner stuff like Electric Wizard and Sleep. I find it's motivating without making me feel like I need to redline to match the tempo (but this is probably just because I'm slow). Although I do pull out the August Burns Red on occasion. Also sprinkle in some Rosetta.

And I have to say, with some embarrassment, that the Punk Goes Pop/90s/80s stuff is great for riding (if you were an angsty metalcore lover like I was in high school). I don't know what it is, but listening to Crown the Empire sing Maroon 5 really makes me happy when I'm suffering. And any time a band is screaming Taylor Swift at me on top of double bass pedals, I'm sold.

Nice, Hunter!  For punk covers, I can't think of anyone beyond Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, but I'll have to do some digging.

Boy, this planning thread has gotten off-topic.  Smiley

Hunter, is that profile pic from Los Colinas south of I-10?

Yup. From earlier this year on an overnighter from Gardner Canyon to town on the AZT. Dejay had plenty of time to stop and take photos of me as I was trying to catch up to him. My last trip on the Ogre. And now I'm sad.

As far as CTR planning goes, my first major shakedown/training ride will be the Coconino Loop this weekend. Still trying to tweak the setup, but I'm almost 100% sure I'm staying singlespeed.

Also trying to get my body/bike first aid kit down a little. Does anybody bring baby powder? Or, like, baby wipes? I'll be living out of the bike from immediately after the ddc through the first week of august at least, and I think, like, funk?, is going to be more of a problem than it has been before.

Baby wipes are your friend, Hunter.  Just remember that. Wink

EDIT:  Nice bottles!

EDIT #2: What have you done to that poor blue Mariachi?

Yep, I always have some Gold Bond medicated powder with me, works great to combat swampiness when needed, also works great to powder up an inner tube should you need to put one in. Most of my human repair kit has a dual function for bike repair, too.
