Thinking about flying into Albuquerque, seems to be closest major airport. If anyone could offer a ride from nearby or would like to meet up and split rental please get in contact with me. Would like to buy flight soon but might wait in case someone offers up better solution. Thanks!

How many pairs of cycling shorts do people bring? I have only gone on 3 day rides and am wondering how well one pair will hold up after 8 days. Is washing shorts in a stream advisable? I would worry about small amounts of silt.

Lot more things to worry about than your shorts  icon_biggrin

Get some of these, and just keep everything clean down there

1 chamois, and one pair of fast drying boxer briefs like Exofficio just to sleep in should do the trick. Turn the chamois inside out and let it air dry overnight. It'll be soaked within 60 minutes of riding no matter what you do. No way I'd wash my chamois in a stream, but I'm sensitive to saddle sores so YMMV

I've seen guys in the past bring 2 pair and have one airing out while wearing the other.

I've had great success with bringing something else (boxers or long johns depending on weather) to sleep in and only bringing one chamois.

CT was busy this weekend.

I was dropped off at Kenosha Pass at sunset on Thursday and rode home from there, made it back in time for dinner on Friday.

With the Jupiter and Venus coupling and full moon rising and distant lightning storms it was a beautiful night to be out on the Tarryall detour.  Dare I say I actually enjoyed the detour?  Though, the Hayman burn area was not that great.

A massive amount of backpackers on the trail and I actually saw 3 or 4 other bikepackers too.  Good times, even if it was a little hot out there.

The Tarryall is actually a pretty sweet detour, eh?  I liked it, anyway.  Much better than the old 285 detour IMO.

Yeah, I could see how it wouldn't be the most pleasant mid-day though.  Reversing the direction would also make it a bit more of a grunt.

For sure.  We rode it westbound several years back, and it was, like, 100 degrees.  Then we found ourselves right in the middle of a monster lightning storm.  Definitely made for some interesting riding/racing for the trees.  In terms of detours, though, it is pretty enjoyable I think.  Not racing this year, but I can't wait to get back out there.

Hello everyone!

I am looking forward to starting the CTR from Denver, my estimated departure date is August 1st, this is due to some summer classes that will not let me leave any sooner.
Hopefully I will still get to see and chat with some of you along the way!

Here's my question... I will be using a Garmin Oregon 600 GPS and would like to download the supplied .gpx file from the CTR website under the topofusion map to fallow as well as view on my computer before I depart. I am using a Mac, are there any Mac users here that can suggest the most detailed, (hopefully a free download) to view this file?

-Thank you all!

I use Garmin Basecamp http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp
I also have the topo maps add on and I can't remember if the basic version includes the topo view. You can upload tracks, routes, waypoints, etc., directly to your GPS including the topo maps if you have them installed.

GPS file depot is a good place to find maps once you've got basecamp and map installer installed.

Wilderness detours question...

Are the detours listed on the purple pages in thew data book the exact ones used in the race?
Secondly do these then obviously match the GPS track?  I rode most of the ones in the book when I toured the route a few years ago except Tarryall, I took the highway.

Stefan's website has a little blurb saying the latest data book matches the CTR course. I can only assume that the GPX matches as well.

Pretty sure it matches - Toby did a pretty good job with the track.

Other than BaseCamp, you can load the GPX using: http://gpsvisualizer.com/ and check it out in your browser.
