Looks like Erik Lobeck is heading north on 550. Bummer, I'm guessing that he's out. But, then again, his projected time is  "<50 days," so maybe he's just taking a side trip or two!

Nope, doesn't look like it.

Finally got the laptop out so I can see the blue dots. Cannot believe how far Jesse and Jefe are already. Insane. They must be really eager to breathe some smog in Denver.

He was intercepted and reset his SPOT near blackhawk (thanks to Shawn Gregory), but still isn't showing points.  Could be a problem with his SPOT.

Aaron Weinsheimer called in from Silverton. Dan Hickstein called in from near Silverton. And The Long Ranger called in from Frisco!

Uh oh, looks like Jeff Spencer is chasing rabbits. Hope that he gets back on route soon!

Edit: And it looks like Cullen Barker is looking for gold.

Edit: Not sure where Brian Vaughan is heading...

Ouch -- on all of them.

Jeff is still on the CT, accidentally following it past Spring Creek.  One can only assume he'll eventually hit a wilderness sign!

Brian is on "White Creek", which is a beautiful contour trail that goes over to Engineer Mountain... but is definitely not the CT.  It is an easy turn to miss going eastbound on the CT.

Nope, won't be making it to the front range for the finish, just playing blue dot junky now.

Ha, those errors that I intentionally inserted into the GPX file must be working!

Just kidding, of course.

Yup, looks like a bail.  Marc Stannard dropped his SPOT off back in Durango, so he's out.  Likely Erik Lobeck is out as well.

Photos!!!

Eszter and I rode backwards on the course, from Bolam Pass to Salt Creek, and took some photos along the way.  Some are going to Mountain Flyer, but here are some B-sides.  If you can identify any of the riders I couldn't, please post up.

Jesse was so fast, we saw him but a lot sooner than we expected.  Didn't get a photo.

Jerry Oliver in second.

Jefe right behind.

Matt Schiff, looking calm and confident.  Not carrying a SPOT.

Neil Beltchenko from Crested Butte.

Paul Spencer heading down after Section Point.

Max Morris grunting it out.

They say half the battle is just getting to the start line.  Max proved this, suffering broken/bruised ribs from a bikepath crash in Tucson, a broken derailleur on Engineer Mtn, a taco'd wheel from a collision on the Durango bikepath (!!!), and a big night out on the town.  His pre-CTR adventures have the makings of a very good short story.

It's high flower season in the high country.

Race organizer Stefan Griebel with his awesome climbing helmet.  So far so good with him on his (pre-race) injured achilles.

AK/Iditarod superhero Pete Basigner.

Author of a very sweet CO MTB guidebook, Dan Hickstein, stoked from the Blackhawk DH.

Unknown rider, dropping down Blackhawk.

Mammatus clouds looking slightly ominous, but the pass was clear of rain and thunder all afternoon.

Heading down through the flowers, unknown rider.

?

? #2

Triple Crown rider Eric Foster, confidently walking over the pass.

Unknown but highly stoked racer.  ?#3

?#4

Velorution Cycles (start line this year) owner Joey Ernst, feeling the high altitude buzz.  He lives here but was knocked out by the amazing view waiting for him at the top.

Joey making the first switchback look easy.

Danny Powers in front.

Todd Johnson and...

Pete Schuster, I believe.

Those two, heading down.

Tree that was hit by lightning that day by the storm parked on Indian Ridge.  Another big hunk of the tree was blown 30 feet away, towards the trail.

And finally, Dax Massey carrying some kind of baguette or other large bread product on outside of his pack.

oboy Jefe and Jesse are duking it out whilst approaching Sargent's Mesa... will it storm on them?  Will they make it through before nightfall?

actually I have no idea, I've just heard Eszter's tales of haunted trails and close encounters of the bovine variety.  Does Sargent's ride equally hard in both directions? It sounds as if it might.  I'd imagine it would be equally scary in a thunderstorm or in the dark, as exposed as it is.

Erik Lobeck.  no news as to why he is in Ouray. Probably not feeling "highly stoked".

based on the assumption that he is riding the only Scalper 29er in the race, the rider in the flowers is Travis Wildeboer
and Unk #4 possibly Jeff Spencer (based again, on the bike/position in the race)

That's Benjamin Gannon from Fort Collins, who is apparently spotless?  His girlfriend Teresa Garcia is also racing and is currently bombing into Silverton.
