i rode buff creek-CT section yesterday-Sunday and it was glorious, fast, dry and just beautiful
...ran into some backpackers that were heading to durango.  told them to expect bikepackers on their way out.  they both were like, what?  i said bikepackers, the CTR.....they smiled and said "cool, cant wait.  Cant wait to get above treeline.  Thats where I wanna camp out and rest, yeah treeline..they were stoked." They planned for 25 days to get to the end.....

Ha, those errors that I intentionally inserted into the GPX file must be working!

Just kidding, of course.

LOL!

based on the assumption that he is riding the only Scalper 29er in the race, the rider in the flowers is Travis Wildeboer
and Unk #4 possibly Jeff Spencer (based again, on the bike/position in the race)

Travis Wildeboer is actually in the photo after the flowers, in the baby blue jersey and shorts. I'm rooting for him and he is the reason I'm following this race. He was one of two runners (and the 15th ever) to finish the Barkley marathon this year. Good luck to all!

Uh oh, looks like Jeff Spencer is chasing rabbits. Hope that he gets back on route soon!

Edit: And it looks like Cullen Barker is looking for gold.

Edit: Not sure where Brian Vaughan is heading...

Looks like everyone is back on track. Also looks like Aaron Johnson missed the dirt road turnoff and kept right on cruising down Hwy 149 towards Lake City but figured it out and turned around. His penalty was an additional 500 ft of elevation gain required to get back up to Slumgullion Pass; I suppose it could be a heck of a lot worse though...

Thanks for the photos Eszter and Scott ! Eszter I followed your blue dot a few years ago. Your awesome. I am pretty sure your beat almost everyone. Super stoked to follow this race north/east. My two bros, Will R. and Brue S. from the Bay Area are first timers and and I have major props from them. I hope the trail angles shine brightly on these lads.

It is an easy turn to miss going eastbound on the CT.

Yikes!

Thanks for the great pics!
Heard from Bob Butrico when he stopped in Silverton. He said the storm on Indian was brutal, lots of rain and 3" of hail "that literally hurt."

Good luck to all racers! Stay safe!

With a GPS the route is generally pretty easy to follow -- but you do need to know how to use it.  Pete B. gave Cullen a quick GPS tutorial at 9pm the night before, but it doesn't seem to have been enough given his extra-curricular climb to 13,000 feet!

Elevation and storms are bigger challenges for people coming from outside CO, in my opinion.  It's hard to do well in CTR if you don't live here, and historically that's been pretty true.  Hats off to anyone coming from lowlands or deserts for taking on this beast.

I can't wait to see what nightfall does to the JB/JJ duo.  Will Jesse be able to simply let Jefe go and grab some winks of sleep, hoping to catch back with more speed tomorrow?  Or will he forgo sleep and stay with him.

Nice pics Scott and E! Really hard not riding and looking at the great weather today! But as I don't have E to chase what's the point?

The rider with the beard in the picture is Nate Stewart.

Go Jefe! And good luck to all the other riders!

Oh and I noticed that Jefe's dots are not directly on the route. I'm sure he is on the route as he knows it so well. Maybe it is the ghosts on that mesa?

And if Eric Lobeck is out super tough and feel for the guy.
