Durango to Denver!
4am start?

I've been talking with Durango locals Joey and Ian, and we all agree that starting at Joey's bike shop in town, velorution cycles, would be great.  It's 5 miles or so to the TH from there which would be good to spread everyone out.

Start Time?  With some feedback from CTR veterans, my gut is saying 4am.  Thought I'd post up here and let you all throw suggestions with reasons out there.  I'm think Silverton is pretty closed down at 8pm, so that gives the 5-day crowd 16 hours to get there with fresh legs.

For those wanting to start in Denver, I'd suggest Monday July 22, but we'll have the "official" group start in Durango!

Happy New Year, and let the riding stoke begin!!!   headbang

what is the reason behind starting on sunday instead of saturday? that kind of makes the 7-8 day people have to take more than a week off work which is not always easy.

The reasoning is that most working stiffs (like myself) will spend Saturday just getting to Durango.  So, unless you live there, it really comes down to whether you are adding a day off prior to the race, or to finish the race.

And, of course, you are absolutely free to start anytime you'd like!!

Sounds interesting..... It would slow you down for sure if you had to wait in Silverton for things to open or you would have to carry a LOT of food to get to Bueny.. I'm going to try it again I hope... Can't wait to huck myself off of the Crest down Fooses like my friends with the big bikes.

Interesting variation to reverse the direction. Suggest that it reverses every year. Odd years East, even years West.

I'm pretty psyched about the new direction!  I'm already dreading the climb from Silverton to Stony Pass...and of course it's not exactly a walk in the park once you're there.

Regarding the suggested 4am start...I actually love starting big rides really early in the morning.  I've wished for earlier starts in past CTR's so that maybe just maybe I could make it over the 10 mile range day 1.  But in some ways I'm not in favor in this case because it only serves to help the ultra fast people go even faster.  It might level the playing field if the start were later so that pretty much no one can make it to silverton before things close.  Then both the ultra fast and the mid pack racer will pretty much need to carry food for the long haul.  Or of course wait till things open the next morning....

So....we eat a huge breakfast at Carvers and roll out at 9  headbang

Just throwing out ideas.  For me personally, *if* I can get my act together to make this happen, I probably won't be making it to silverton before it shuts down regardless of start time.  So 4am actually sound great.  I'm just feeling jealous that the fast people will be able to gain a huge advantage with this critical re-supply.

I think I can make Silverton before close but might pack all the food anyway... I'm partial to stuff I bring from home and not so stoked on what's available in Silverton.  Eating convenience store food starting on Day 2 would be less than ideal for me, at least.

Can't speak for the other folks Stefan talked to but I recommended an early start, in part because starting early gets a relatively large chunk of racers to - and hopefully through - the high, weather-prone Sections 23/22 during the early part of Day 2.  If we start late the chances of a lot of people on 23/22 during prime T-storm hours the next day is huge.  Although individual wise decisions are obviously the most important, I thought since those sections are so close to the start in the eastbound direction, we should at least consider that when thinking about the start time.

Aaron, you should pull it off!  I'm going to be trying like mad to be ready, busy shop season be damned...

Is there a timeframe when the Forest Service is expected to make a decision about the reroute of the CDT/CT?

From what I can tell from the basic maps available of the new trail section, it would be a lot of extra detour for relatively little trail, since the CP Wilderness is smack in the middle of the new section.  Looks like we'd have to detour via road a lot longer on the western side than we already do on the eastern side.

Not to mention the BV resupply factor...

Yep, not much in the way of the potential new trail for bikes.  The 2013 route will follow the same track as the last several years.  Just backwards!

I say 10pm start time Saturday, it’s not like your going to sleep the night before anyways. The slower riders don’t have to kill themselves to make it to Silverton, but making it a bit more strategic for the fast riders!

Speak for yo'self!  I plan on getting as much delicious shut-eye as possible before the start.  Don't expect to see me opening the shop until 3:59am, at earliest.  Wink

And a night start would make it less strategic for one-day-to Silverton folks.  That would put you on the extremely weather-prone 23/22 during the worst part of the day... I've already been too close to lightning up there.  No wish to replicate the experience.

ITT is the way to go with weather and what time one can pick up the mail, work sucks and what does that have to do with riding the CTR?. I'm in like Flynt.
This route gets the vertical out of the way quick, hopefully I'll show up.
Go CTR riders, we just lost one CTR finisher in an avalanche James Lindenblatt. A supremely awesome individual, Im glad to have known him peace all.
