Having succeeded twice and failed once, I can say with some authority that the CTR takes a healthy mix of wisdom, experience, luck, desire, mechanical skills, fitness, tenacity, self-control, self-reflection, and downright bull-hardheadedness. I have no idea what it takes to set a record--but I assume lots more of the same would be a good starting point. It's unlikely that one characteristic, such as desire, can compensate for a limitation of any other.

Toby, I think a couple big ones that you left of were patience and flexibility.  After reading MANY blog reports, it seems many people are unwilling to sit out weather, sleep off fatigue, deal with small issues, try something different, etc.

I never planned on drinking a coke a day, but I did.  I never planned on backtracking to sleep in a great spot, but I did.  I never wanted to ride past midnight because I needed to get to water, but I did.  I never wanted to carry a full bladder of water up some of the climbs, but I did.  There were so many things that I never planned to do, but I just did them anyway knowing it would make me successful.  I'm not seeing much of that in other people's blog reports.

I just wonder what would have happened to some of those people if they had just spent 6 or 7 hours sleeping when things got rough.  I read somewhere in this forum that you should never quit unless you've slept on it for a night. I think it was DH.

Wise words for sure. I meant to say something like this at the start too...

  • If you feel like quitting, get off your bike. Relax, take in your surroundings, eat and drink.
  • If you still feel like quitting, go to sleep.
  • If you still feel like quitting, then quit.

True enough. Come to think about it, flexibility might be number 1 for me!

fastmtnbiker33w, the full loop idea sounds awesomely epic. It would probably need to consist of dirt roads linking bits of singletrack since there isn't another huge trail like the CT, but it could still be a great ride. One option would be to ride the CT as a race and then do a slower tour back on the rest of the loop. You've got me looking at a whole bunch of maps trying to make something work. Any ideas for a route?

Hey CTR Community!

Check out this facebook page - a group is working to make Bailey into a 'Trails Town'.

The bit that gets me excited is the vision to have a mtn bike trail connecting Bailey to Kenosha - sure as hell would beat riding 285  thumbsup

Oh yeah, I'd kick in a few bucks to help build that trail!

CTR 2013 timing?

All I'm saying is, the Perseid meteor showers peak on August 12th 2013, and there is a full moon on August 20th. For the 'normies' in the race who take about a week or longer to finish, starting the race on Monday the 12th would provide for some mighty fine meteors during the first couple nights on the bike, and an awesome full moon for the finish. Maybe it's too early to chat about the 2013 start date, but Im just saying, it'd be pretty cool if those events happened during the race (which I hope to be officially participating in next year Smiley

I didn't think 285 segment was that bad. It was refreshing and fun when I rode it - pouring rain and trucks passing a few feet away. Spray off the tires, exhaust, mud outside the mini shoulder if you chickened out. Kept the adrenaline up for the final few steeper miles below the pass.

Sure, would be awesome - except that it'll be raining every night and storming with a vengeance!  Wink

We should all rally for a Durango group start in 2013! After completing it twice from Denver,  the eastbound version now seems like a cool way to mix it up. The solo ITT could always happen but the momentum of the group is way cool I've found. I live in Durango and would be happy to help coordinate a good starting place....  headbang
