ETurk may finish up tonight.  He is only 16 miles away now.  Way to go bud.  He is my brother in law.

This is Chuck Janecek - I hit the Junction Creek finish line around 8:40 pm last evening, 8/10.  Puts me ataround 9 days 14 hours.

I'm (WAS!) a rookie.  This was THE MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE OF MY LIFE.

After having ridden the exact same route as the speedsters who finished days ago, I have nothing but complete respect for all who enter, all who finish, and especially those who finish in 5-6 days.

Spring Creek Pass to Stony Pass might be the single greatest day I've ever had on my bike.  Bluebird day, riding across the roof of the San Juans ... Wow.  Many thanks to Marco from Boulder who found my sleeping bag and bivy near the sheepherder, tied it to his pack, and delivered it to me in Silverton the next morning. BEERS for Marco and Zach in Boulder soon, THANKS.

Thanks to Stefan and Scott and all others who donate their time to make this event happen.  Stellar.

Thanks, Forest! Hilarious story from the group on ATVs about the guy you rode down with hurling rocks at them. I can only imagine what you must have been thinking!!

Yeah, it was totally surreal. My head was spinning from making the tough decision to turn back around and bail out when I ran into this guy who was out on a day ride. He kindly offered to take me to Lake City.

As we were riding down, something fell off his bike. I stopped to pick it up as he continued down the trail.

As I came out of the trees, his bike was lying in the trail and he was hurling rocks and shouting at a line of 5 or 6 ATVs. All of the ATVers were stopped and just looked stunned as rocks were flying at them. The mt biker I met mistakenly thought that they were not allowed on the trail and was trying to get them to turn around. Right intention, bad execution.

I was thinking, it's bad enough that I just bailed out of this race and now I happen to run into a mt biker who is nuts and is going to get me shot or at least stomped on by a group of pissed off ATVers. I tried insert some sanity into the situation and, luckily, things deescalated quickly.

The guy who helped me out ended up being a really kind and sweet man. He admitted that he had problems with his temper. Overall, a really nice guy though and he even drove me all the way to Salida.

Jill, congrats again on finishing. You rock!

Hi All!

I finished the last segment (segment 1) late last night - and correction my finish time was 10:54PM (not 9:54 as I think I might of said on my call in last night - was a bit tired!)! It was a tough uphill NIGHT finish! Sunday July 31st at 5:45AM - Finish Aug 10th 10:45pm. The man I meet at the end of the trail had a ax resting on his shoulder and said to me "do you do this often" - pretty freaky - but after explaining what I just did all was well.

Some notes:
* Although you see more people heading to Durango, it was lonely without anyone else to ride with.
* It would be safer for rookie's to not try this in reverse, since their are no services after Silverton and you really can't underestimate anything.
* Above said, it was nice to have more services at the end (more small awards).
* The trail is equally well marked in reverse as is going the typical way.
* The Denver City Lights was not just a sight to see but a motivating factor on Segment 1 - to get to the end!
* I had zero bike issues, not even a single flat, nothing!
* The Niner Jet 9 RDO (Carbon) was perfect throughout! Thanks Golden Bike Shop for the "just in time" setup!!!!  With the bike fully loaded (frame bag, handlebar bag, gas tank and rear bag) - I think it just passed the real world bike test!  AND MIKE at the Golden Bike Shop makes a SWEET Frame Bag!!! You need to charge more Mike!
* My heals had no issue at all.
* Drinking walnut oil directly worked - not sure how much, but it did not cause me any harm (digestive or otherwise).
* The Tarp Tent Rainbow worked like a charm!
* I am proud to have avoided storms at 12-13,000 feet - even in stormy conditions.

Most importantly - every rider should complete segment 24 and 23 in reverse at least once in their life! That is the most remembered CTR section period.

I am very proud of what I accomplished, without any regret even though I did not do 10 mile and elected the older route.  I will write up my experience later to share for those interested. Thanks for organizing this event, one that I will always remember, with many stories to tell and emotions to feel, as long as I live.

It's been said before and I'll say it again - there is no way that the experience of being out there can be replicated or accurately conveyed with words or pictures. Regardless, here's my attempt.  Damn that was awesome!!!!!

Below is my trip report.  It was an amazing journey.  It was funny trying to remember all this stuff after the finish.  I could not recall where I was at a specific time due to the distance covered and exhaustion.

I get the feeling that It was a cohesive and supportive riders out there!  I remember feeling like everyone was just isolated and less than supportive on my attempt.  Not a lot of comraderie even at the places in town as we crossed paths during fueling.  Glad to see the change.  I remember feeling as if any help/contact given between riders was viewed as breaking the rules so it seemed everyone kind of kept their distance.  After a few days I was so far behind that I never saw anyone again after Buena Vista though.

My take on the whole situation.  All I can say is that the weather gods smiled on us this year...for the most part.
