He needs to cut back on the pies!

Nathan Gallion called in near Kenosha Pass. He reports a calm morning but laments the rains. And Emily Brock called in from above Kenosha Pass. Her call was cut short but she's doing good and  heading to Copper today.

Also Doug Johnson called in to confirm he is out.

Perfect morning here with my view of Georgia Pass and Ten Mile, some overcast. The threat of storms brewing up are here again today. Yesterday was the longest sustained storm for some time here. Usually its just for a few hours, but that went from about 3-10pm, with not much electricity involved.
Looks like an entertaining race up front. The middle pack should make it over Ten Mile before the monsoonal flow today, the timing over Copper could be interesting.  The trend here has been soaker storms rather then short intense storms, less electricity, or it might not rain at all.

Steve Lacey called in from Copper Mountain. He would like to report that when a tree falls in the forest they do in fact make noise.

Scary!!  With all the beetle kill in the area any wind can potentially knock down a ton of trees. My bro works for the Forest Service up in Summit County and told me that they estimate that in White River National Forest alone approx. 98,000 trees fall EVERY DAY!  Scary fact for sure, and with all this stormy weather I'm sure it's scary in the dead timber stands!

Also, the new tracker whizzbangs are awesome Scott!!  The weather overlay adds a whole other dimension to what we can speculate about from the comfort of our chairs!

Tuesday 8/3, 09:05

Wow!  These guys got a huge helping of Colorado Thunderstorm style suffering yesterday and almost everyone is still hauling.  Most notable is Eszter Horanyi who is just rolling through Copper Mountain.  Eszter won the women's solo 24-hours of Moab last year, and she's not giving any slack to the only 5 hardmen in front of her.  Jefe and Jeff K. probably enjoyed a beautiful sunrise above Copper Mountain:

After the long hike-a-bike of the Tenmile range from Breck to Copper, the flowy and rideable trail up through Copper Ski Resort and on up the elongated meadows by 10th Mountain Division's ski hut Janet's Cabin is a welcome change of pace.  A short hike to Searle pass leads to some great high altitude treeless riding for a few miles over to Kokomo Pass where we find Jeff & Jefe now:

Then comes a fast, steep, sometimes loose descent down to Camp Hale, probably with wildflowers up to your armpits.  A nice, flat respite of riding through Camp Hale is short lived before the trail tilts up again to climb to Tenessee Pass.  Many of the trailing riders may be calling this area Camp Hail this afternoon, but Ethan and Jesse are really pushing the pace, with Ethan descending into Leadville as I type this.  Both are pushing a 4-day pace, and I'd say they gained some momentum hammering through all that rain.  I can't fathom anyone with a superlight bivy having a very comfortable sleep last night...

The remainder of the pack is spread out all over the 32 miles of Segment 6 between Kenosha Pass and Breckenridge.  I imagine they are all thrilled to be riding in the clear morning air with bluebird skies instead of the rain yesterday afternoon/evening/night...

Colorado Public Radio contacted me for an interview about the CTR.  I'm not sure when they're airing it (sometime today?), but you can listen to it here.

Astute observers will notice the picture in the link is clearly not that of a CTR racer...

I sent 'em a link to a great pic of Dave Harris taken by Scott Morris last year.  Hope that's OK Scott...

Looking for information???

Emily Sportsman's tracker hasn't moved since 7:00 or so this morning.  I'm a concerned daddy type.

Any words? Do these trackers not work sometimes? Hopefully they are attached to the rider by miles of duct tape and never get separated from the rider?

Great interview Stefan, nice job.  Hope they can change the pic.

Man, Jesse and Ethan are already out of Leadville.  That seems so unbelievably fast...

Skies are still clear, but the trail must be wet from so much steady rain yesterday.

Looks like she just showed up a number of miles from her last point.  Most likely she forgot to reset her tracker.  They need to be cycled back into tracking mode every 24 hours and it can be easy to forget...

Yes, as soon as I entered my message, and went back to the tracker I saw the update.

Thanks.

As a parent, I think it might be better without the tracker!!!!!!

By they way, I was kidding about the tracker.  It's great and way too addictive. Just if there wasn't one I wouldn't bother worrying until 4-5 more days.

I was part of Eszter's support team at Moab last year... most notably she looks to be at least a couple hours ahead of her husband, Chris Miller!

She's quite an enduro racer.  Thanks for the site and the tracker, all of her supporters are cheering for her.  She's had a difficult racing year this season.

Looks like most of the pack is getting dumped on right now, with the leaders in little pockets of dryness.
