Since the seed for the CT stage race format idea seems to have sprung from the Coconino, thought I'd quite lurking and chime in. I hate to be a detractor, there already seems to be quite a bit of that relating to this topic, someone let me know if I have this wrong, I'm sure they will, but I think the intention of the Coco format was to introduce people to bikepacking race events in a social stage format. By doing so on a course that's: moderate in length, a closed circle and having convenient resupply/bail opportunities. It was also scheduled at a time of year when almost everyone is going to be at their fittest and having the highest potential to complete the entire course. The weather over the history of the Coco might not be meshing with these goals, but that's another issue. You ride at your own pace, regroup in the evening and rest as long as you like, then complete the next stage. This was more of a social thing to expose folks to bikepacking with a little bit of racing thrown in, than a serious race for the record books. I think it's a brilliant idea. An awesome Intro to Bikepacking Ultras 101. I'm just having a problem in trying to imagine doing the CT in the stage format, without making it into a >75 person race [incurring all those issues] and involving complicated logistics that will ironically weed out more people than the already inherent difficulty of the course would cause...
