Agreed freeskier.  Would be nice to have a SPOT on him.

There was a bit of a route error -- I had the old course (Yaeger vs little Yaeger) on the tracker, but have fixed it now.   Everyone is passed that point by now, anyway.

Looks like the bulk of the pack is digging into the big climb from the Verde.  Temperatures are a merciful ~78 degrees right now -- though I'm sure the lower portions of the climb will feel sufficiently hot out there.

I skipped or was forced to skip Bill Williams mountain on both of my thru-rides this spring.  I really, really, wish I was climbing up from the Verde now, with an afternoon rally up and over Billy Boy Mountain in the afternoon.

We are the first (hopefully only) DNF... we had to bail after being hit by a pink jeep on the descent into Sedona...pink jeeps everywhere.

Actually, here's the real story. Came with my daughter (who is 12) to attempt this loop. She has done long road tours (500+ miles) and wanted to up the ante with a long mtb ride. So a week before I was to depart for the Coco she said she wanted to give it a go. Heck yeah! Let's do it. First day she rode strong, handling all the rough stuff well and we made it to the lookout well before sunset. Beautiful camp spot, great to hang with the other riders and enjoy dinner and a sunset. Day two, she rode like a champ down the Munds wagon trail into Sedona. The single track through Sedona started to wear on her as she had to HAB many of the short little techy climbs, off and on the bike, over and over. We got to Templeton Tr. and consider our options and motivations. I knew pushing onward to Mingus and then the long re-supplyless day 3 would turn this so far uber-fun adventure (her words) into burly trudge for her. We decided to end on a high note and enjoyed a casual ride back to Flagstaff. Burger in Sedona, Dairy Queen in Flagstaff and our 2012 Coco is done. So we are out but she laid a solid foundation for future rides. Her closing words were "dad, when I get more experience on the technical stuff, I'd be happy to come back and do it again." Heck yeah! We'll be back next year.

Cheers to the riders still on course and those of you starting this upcoming Friday. The stage concept of the race is a great idea. It was fun to hang with the other riders and it surly helped boost my daughters motivation seeing others as crazy as here dad.

One final note for those starting on the 12th. It is elk hunting season through most of the forest on day 1, really no big deal, just FYI.

Wow, Jeremy that is incredible about your daughter making it so far through the loop and enjoying it to boot!  Well done to both of you.  Thanks for coming out and for posting your story here.  Sounds like a roaring success to me!

Pretty epic that your 12 yr old gave it a go...  I'm getting my 10 yr old boy into mtb'ing, but it's a slow trudge at times as he'd rather be playing MineCraft.  Once we are on the trail he has a blast, but he gives out quick.  Is your daughter just that into cycling or do you find yourself "urging" her to get in time in the saddle?  Glad you had fun, memories made with your kid are worth more than a finish any day!

Question for those that have done this race before.  What is your favorite stage and why?

Day 2 there's nothing that's going to top Sedona!

When your in camp night one you see the sun setting Mingus is on the horizon line. When you top out on Mingus your looking back at the huge landscape you just crossed.

It's also the most trail and primitive dirt roads, the other days have more graded stuff and less ST. It's all good tho IMO as you continue to loop back around and see again how far Mingus recedes. I haven't done the new 4th day I have ridden the new trail in the changed section and I think it will be better now.

On my way to Mormon Lake I say Aleck, Lynda, and one other rider.

Kip, the temps at camp 1 were perfect. Probably in the upper 40s low 50s. My daughter is that into cycling, she loves to ride her bike and work on it to. We/she built up her bike from old cannibalized parts I had around. She is going to tear it down and give it a new paint job this month. Fun project. She has keyed into the freedom and mobility that riding provides.

Have fun next week. I wish we were still out, but that will happen. It was beautiful scenery and fun riding. I concur with AZTripper that the Sedona section was the best. That was far as we got, but because it was so fun we rode some other trails in the area before heading back to Flagstaff.

Heads up ITTers: word has it the water at Coyote spring (first water past Mingus) is desperation muck with a dead rat in it.  3rd hand info, but hopefully some pics will come in as riders finish up later today.

Yeah, Linda is surely motoring. She might have some pressure because I think Jill is out there somewhere and no doubt she is hauling butt also. I hear this last bit of this stage is some super quality single track.

Any Oct. 12th starters interested in grabbing dinner/beer Thursday night before we embark on Friday AM?  I'll be rolling into town around 4pm that day and would like to meet up and discuss the trip.
