Forest service board says robinson flat is unreachable as of yesterday.  I parked at robinson flat & mosquito ridge road and rode the glenn canyon segment. Moved some debris but in good shape.  Then continued to french meadows, hell hole and took road 21 to 11 pines road.  Just before the ellicott bridge, the road is 99.5% gone, literally.  Huge hole with a 1 foot wide path on the uphill side.  sad2 then on the other side of the bridge, downed trees cover the road entirely all the way to Road 1.  I have some pictures but don't know how to reduce the size.

so, decided to take hunters trail.   BangHead Extremely overgrown and the trail is lost as you enter section 7, T13N R13E.  Camped for the night  sleepy1 and finished bushwaking up to the logging roads back to Road 21.  Should have gone north on 14N20 for a shorter distance.  But exploration happens.

Road 21 is open and fine except some water, mud close to the Road 2 connection (big meadows).   thumbsup Beautiful views but sad for the burned areas.

Plenty of water sources but some will dry up by July.

Phillip,

Rad that you got out! When did you get out on this ride?
Do you suggest another route? It looks like you went out direct east instead of continuing north east?

I called the ranger station yesterday and apparently someone drove out past china wall staging area for 11 miles until they saw the snow line. According to my math thats 3mi short of Robinsons Flat. Riding on 2.4's and hoping its enough.

any info helps! Thanks YALL

I did my ride monday and tuesday going counter clockwise on the posted route.  I am not sure if there is any easier way in that section to get across the Rubicon river. You can go across Hell Hole dam but I know nothing of the trails in that area. Sean most likely knows that area.

I have ridden and driven soda springs road a number of times but don't know how it is right now.  forest service most likely errs on the side of caution but they hit it right on 11 Pines road.  For soda springs road this weekend, prepare to get wet and muddy.

Have fun!

Well got turned around at robinsons flat. Whole thing was under 5ft of snow. I imagine it will be cleared in a few weeks. Pushing my evasion through snow in tevas wasnt ideal. Turned back and got a ride out of sugar pine res.  Awesome route tho. All the climbing(seemed forever) was very doable. Thanks again for all your help and warnings!

Nice to know snow is at Robinson flat but sad you had to turn around.  Question: when you got to the end of the foresthill road pavement at the sign, was the dirt road to the right, which is Robinson Flat Road, covered in snow?  Robinson flat road goes uphill and you can access the Forest service lookout tower and connects to the Western States trail or continue to mosquito ridge road (6 miles from Robinson flat).

a friend of mine reports that yesterday he rode in the Christmas valley and Scott's lake area.  Lots of water and snow.  Big meadow is basically a pond.

Also, on the MTBR forums, reports are showing lots of snow going over Freel pass area.  Wonderful to have this winter, though.

We'll see what happens to the final route.

I'm going to do some scouting this weekend and make a call as to whether we do it on the current date or push it out a month. I also have a route that heads from Auburn to Graeagle, Downieville and Nevada City before returning to Auburn. We have to be able to get out Foresthill Road to Soda Springs for that one as well so we'll see how it goes the next couple of weeks. Raining here in Foresthill today.......

Yeah, it's so sad that we can't go out that way anymore. You're a tough SOB to even attempt that, it was hard BEFORE the fire went through.

Rode some of the course this weekend, nothing unusual, pretty much everything below 7500' is ok. Unfortunately we still have another 1500' to go for a lot of the route. We have 100+ degree temps in the valley and mid 80's in the Sierra this week and next, so that will really help. A few people have inquired as to whether the date will remain the same. I'm up for a group decision but I'm leaning towards keeping it and just letting everyone experience a bit more adventure headbang I'll be heading up  over the next few weeks and will report back. It's been a all time record year for snow this year, but I'm hoping that we'll be in mostly decent shape in a month.

Sean, looked at the revised gpx file.  question: do you intend to take fuelbreak trail 100 yards after crossing foresthill bridge or the old dirt road at gate 114B that is about 15 yards after crossing the bridge?  The gpx file does not show a track at that location.

Up fuelbreak. I updated the track on the site. Check it and make sure. I find that the cached copy shows up sometimes.....

Here's the Trackleaders sign up. https://form.jotformpro.com/trackleaders/calsierra17

If you need to rent a SPOT, let Scott know soon and I'll make sure it gets to you on or before the race start.

If anyone is interested, I created paper maps that can be printed using USGS 30x60 minute series maps and the provided gpx file.

Unfortunately, I used 11x17 paper for five of the seven sheets, so it's about $10 to print in color at a FedEx Office / Kinko's, and possibly less at a local copy shop.

Some notes are on sheet 1. Print "actual size" from Acrobat.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByT47rdvlO-lbnNaalliR3J6Ym8

The link is a folder with seven PDF files. (I thought it was a zip file with seven PDFs in it.)

They were giving my computer some trouble last night, especially if you zoom in. I've got 6GB of RAM, and that's not quite enough. But you should be able to put them on a stick and have a local copy shop print them.

Use at your own risk, etc., etc.

{edit---some more details}
It's so many sheets because I haven't been able to get rid of the map borders. So sheet 1 and 2 look the same, but the maps are rearranged so the Sacramento map is on top in Sheet 1, and the Placerville map is on top in Sheet 2. This same thing happens on sheets 5 and 6, which are the east side of Lake Tahoe. The difference is in the white border area. You should be able to find the track over a map in all track locations with the combination of all of these sheets.

Normally removing those borders is a fairly trivial clipping operation, but it just won't work for me. I'm gonna try a computer with a lot of RAM to see if that makes a difference.

The USGS maps are scanned at a resolution that's just a bit below ideal. These would look a lot better if the map resolution was a touch higher. They're not 24K Quads, so you don't have to change maps all the time.

The scale is 1:100,000, or 1cm = 1km. 1.6cm ~ 1 mile.

There is a fine-line UTM grid that makes 10cm squares on the maps. This is a 10km UTM grid, which is about 6.2 miles. If you measure that grid and it's 10cm, the map is printed at 1:100,000, if you want to verify that.

I used a NOAA declination app to look up the current declination in the middle of the gpx track area. It's ~13.50 degrees. If true north is straight-up 12 O'clock, magnetic north is just under half-way to 1 O'clock. (When the maps were made it was 17-18 degrees.)

This was all done in QGIS (a free, open-source GIS program), with map TIFFs from NOAA/USGS's TopoView website, and the route GPX. I will say the projections and printing operations (using Print Composer in QGIS) were a bit detailed. (I'm not a GIS professional.)

I made the track in Magenta, 1mm wide, and ~50% transparent so you can see map details under it. If anyone has colorblindness issues and can't see that, please let me know. I might not be able to fix it for this, but in the future, I can choose a better color.

Finally, a real map/GPS nerd comment: These older USGS maps use NAD27, not WGS84. I don't like changing my GPS to NAD27, so I just leave it on WGS84. The error is something like 13m in one direction, and 60-90m in another, which is less than 1mm on this map, so it's really negligible, and I can't think of any reason why you'd use this map in that way.

The race is now up on Trackleaders.  Also, there is a new fire near Truckee but should not affect the race.  May get smoke.  It is the Farad fire and has the I-80 highway at the California/Nevada border closed.  There was a small fire near Hell Hole reservoir that has brought under control this morning.  About 50 acres.

for fire information go to www.inciweb.nwcg.gov.

The climb out of Tahoe does not look inviting. The rest looks sensational. This one is on the list in the next couple of years.

Looking forward to more dot watching.
