I'm in the beginning stages of research for a potential assault on the AZTR (full enchilada) in 2014. I'm wondering if folks out there who have done either the 300 and/or the 750 have recommendations regarding bike choice. My research to-date leads me to believe FS is the way to go. Other than that...any thoughts?

Yep FS seems to be the best way to go, but you still want it to be light IMO. If you look at what the most experienced guys are riding ie Kurt and Scott you'll see fairly light FS rigs.
Scott's been on a Lenz Leviathan for years. Kurt went with Salsa for the sponsorship but still the lighter version for bikepacking.
Of course light but not too light in the wheels and tires. Then everything else you'll be carrying also needs to be as light as possible.
Saw a bunch of hardtails today some carbon some ti lots of high end wheels on everything. Most seemed to be going pretty light.

Full suspension, light gear, and BOMBPROOF tires. I wouldn't ride any tire out there without reinforced sidewalls. Aaron Gulley just won the 300 riding 2.4" Maxxis Ardents with reinforced sidewalls.
