Rod Dagneau of Vancouver and Mason Young of Big Sky left Ten Sleep Brewing in a neutral rollout before stopping for breakfast and then hitting the course.  Looks like the racing is going to be fast and furious, but we were all disappointed that you couldn't make it.  Action at:

Disappointed I couldn't make it too.  Also disappointed there's no AD dot... ?!

Go get 'em boys, and hope they brought lights for the eclipse...

Are both riders scratches?  Good eclipse viewing, at least, I hope.

I definitely scratched. Much harder than I expected. My only other bikepack racing experience was the Smoke and Fire 400 (470) last year and I didn't think it was that hard, but it's 95% dirt roads. This was a different beast.

I rode 88 miles until about 10:45 PM the first day and camped about a mile before Shell Falls. My thermarest popped as I lay down, and the patches wouldn't hold over the 1" gash. But I actually slept for 6 hours, woke up SORE! My Garmin died as I rode past Shell Falls at 7:00 AM. I was misinformed the etrex20x AA batteries would last 4 days, not true, they died after 24 hours, and my spares were dead! Luckily I had the route loaded on my iphone with Gaia, but no mount for it, so taking it out of my pocket every 60 seconds sucked. But I rode the next 12 miles of sweet technical singletrack as the sun rose, and cruised into Shell (SPOT turned off so Trackleaders doesn't record this, need to reset SPOT every 24 hours I guess).

Aaron was there and kindly gave me a ride back to my truck at Ten Sleep Brewery, and I won a finishers beer glass! Thanks Aaron!

The 2 major climbs were mostly dirt road, the descents were mostly singletrack. Smooth, flowey, technical, chunky, braided, hike a bike up and down, etc. Basically rugged, remote, and AWESOME trails! Watch your derailleur on the sagebrush.

I'm jonesing to complete the route, maybe next weekend.

Sorry the bigger picture size keeps flipping the picture upside down. This is in some canyon on the first big descent, lots of swimming holes.

Wow, nice photos Rod, thanks!  Hope to see you here next year.   It is kind of deflating to ride 50 miles and only be 2 miles from where you started, and since no one has finished the course yet we are going to change it from 250 miles to 200 miles to get rid of the portion where the route doubles back on itself.  Now the route will mostly be four climbs and four descents with some cross country too.   I will be heading out Saturday morning to tackle the 200 mile version.

Hey Mason, glad you could make it out.  I am doing an ITT this weekend (changing it to a 200 mile version).  Let me know if you are still thinking about this weekend and we can start together.  Man, you were flying out there, you were averaging about 5.8 miles an hour and if you could have kept up that pace you would have finished well under 48 hours...definitely elite territory!

I was thinking next weekend, but probably not. If you're headed to Smoke and Fire let me know, google maps says the fastest route is through Big Sky so we could carpool or whatever.

Thanks Rod, it was a good adventure even though I was very familiar with the course.  Once I got tired it was a lot harder than I thought, but my moving time was only about 38 hours.  200 miles and 31000 feet of climbing.  It was tough but short enough that I won't be laid low for weeks.  Thinking about early July next year when the wildflowers should be peaking.
