I’ve been interested in riding the Bighorn for some time now, hopefully I will make it for the group start this year. Looks like a stunning route. I will be going for the slowest known time in the “smell the flowers” category icon_biggrin

A few logistical questions: Is Gillette airport the nearest airport to the start? Looks like there is a bus that will get you from Gillette to Buffalo, not sure how to get to Tensleep from there, maybe just ride the bike. Looks like it might be possible to get a bus near the end point.  Any advice on air and ground transportation to/from the start/finish would be appreciated!

Also is the route for this year still a point to point? Last years thread hinted at a loop route possibility.

If I can get it together, it will be a loop route (no wilderness) otherwise it will stay point to point.  Most of the ways to get to ten sleep involve driving.  Probably the best bet is to fly into billings or casper and then take a bus to either powell/lovell or buffalo.  It is definitely an easier ride to ten sleep from Powell.  You can also probably fly into Denver and take a bus.  Allegiant air has super cheap  flights to billings from select locations, but no bikes, so you would have to ship with bike flights.  Failing this, if you can get to sheridan or buffalo I can drive you to start.  Hope you can make it, I think September will be good time to ride!

I am pretty sure I can get a flight then a bus from airport to Buffalo. I will wait until the route is ready before firming up plans.

Okay, the .gpx is:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30848098 This is a 350 mile loop course starting and ending in Buffalo, WY on September 6, 2019 at 7:00 a.m.   If I have time, there will be a couple of changes to the .gpx, which will be up at least 2 weeks before start, otherwise the route will stay as it is.

Nice work! Looks like a much bigger route this year!  I might need another day or two off work for this.

I am trying to download the gpx file from the link you sent, but I can't seem to figure it out.  I signed up for an account, but still I don't see the option to download or export the gpx file.  I just want to upload the GPX file into ridewithgps.

I was trying to put it into ridewithgps, but it kept splitting the track up.  I only have my phone now, but once i signed up, i clicked out of the page, logged in again and then clicked on the route name (which was now highlighted) and a dropdown menu opened with "download" option.  If this doesnt work, pm me and ill email the gpx and kerp trying to fix it for ridewithgps (will probably need smorris

I was able to sort of figure it out.  I looked under "latest files from community on the left" and scrolled down until I found it. There is a download option there.

I will try to get the file to upload to ridewithgps.  I have encountered the problem you are describing before.  Ridewithgps thinks it is multiple tracks, but it really isn't.

Thanks to ec_duz_it, the track is up: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30848098

Still hoping to make a couple of changes after the CTR, so likely this won't be the final .gpx, but I'll make sure new .gpx is up at least two weeks in advance.

Hi Aaron, good luck out on the CTR!  Just a few more questions:

Will the route start in Buffalo or in Story?  I am hoping Buffalo because there appears to be bus service to buffalo from the airport.

Is there a bike shop in Buffalo to ship a bike to?  I see a sporting goods store.  If no bike shop, maybe I could ship a bike to a motel instead.

Do you have any plans for a shorter route option or will there just be the loop route this year?  The only reason I ask is I am not 100% sure I have enough days off to finish the full loop route.  It looks like a 6 day ride for my pace, and I probably only have 5 riding days plus 2 travel days available.  No worries either way regarding this question, but just wondering.

Hi Erin, the route starts and ends in buffalo.  No bike shop there, but i think the sports lure has a bike mechanic, and sheridan has bike shop, also lots of motels in buffalo.  I dont really have plans for shorter route, but you could start one, like buffalo to dayton, and then ride back to buffalo on road.  It is a difficult course, so a shorter option is not a bad idea. I will be there for the start, but if all goes as planned i will be heading out to burning man to collect a bunch of bikes for charity, and so wont be able to do any shuttling this year.

Oh crap, i forgot!...

Just kidding, i fried myself on a very hot training ride and just wasnt ready to take on the ctr (especially since i have accumulated a few too many dnf's lately (even 1 dnf is probably too many)) I also wanted to make sure this route was dialed in.  An itt on the ctr may be in my near future, however.
