Hi all,
first time doing this, should be fun.
i have a preliminary shuttle set up to get to the start on the evening of the 6th, but would be way more convenient if anyone else had room for one more? or is there a good for-hire (cheapish) shuttle option I could look into?

The lowercase 'dw' yellow dot is on the move after an early start from the Utah border! He's nearing Jacob Lake already. I'll be watching intently to see how the journey to the Canyon's edge goes for him.

One more note -- deadline for SPOT Gen3 rentals is coming up in a few days (March 31). Please get signed up if you need one. I'm having the units shipped early to me, in Patagonia, since I'm on the move these days.

Ha.
This just in from Dave:
67 - its closed. Not just closed but a firm it's closed. The adot told me while standing at the gate. Cited 67 is not ploughed and it's closed. I offered no info (re aztr 750) and I did not push the issue. I did not want to stuff it up for nobo riders. There seemed to be a few adot utilities trucks around the place or maybe just one guy do a lot of driving and no work.
I asked around (to verify) and it appears there is still 3-4 feet of snow up on the top of 67 but they are expecting it to melt in the next couple of weeks with all the hot weather they are having

I have snowshoes, but hoping I don't need them. Will carry them if the north rim continues to get more snow or low temps. The road being "closed" doesn't concern me. My understanding is that a backcountry permit is required, but maybe someone with more GC experience can chime in. Still plenty of days of beautiful AZ to melt the snow. I'm not stressing about it. "Even though it is not possible to drive vehicles to the North Rim during the winter, hikers, snowshoers and cross country skiers are able to enter the North Rim of the park through the winter months, provided backcountry permits have been obtained. how crusty is the snow at night?
can you stick to the regular off-highway trail and ride around the ADOT?
and again what a bummer for Dave. Last year he was just a down wrapped burrito in the blizzard.

To snowshoe to Jacob Lake from the North rim might take two days. That's two days extra food you will need to carry with you through the canyon. Yikes!
Hoping there is a big melt between now and then.

LSB - I'm no GC expert, so I can't answer that. I'm just good at reading their website, following their rules, and working around the system. I haven't had a BC permit at GC for years. My plan is to just stand in line at the Permit counter at the south rim. I'm really counting on a massive snow melt. Which might be really bad for the North Kaibab trail... |
