I'm feeling nostalgic watching a JB dot at the front again.  Two singles speeders in the top 6....... And Todd Johnson has 126 miles under his belt while hauling all his supplies from the start........It's a fun year to watch.  Thanks for the pics Stephan, looks epic out there -

Sounds like a rugged start this year, keep on it folks. Anyone have a pic of Chris' set up?

He posted this on his Instagram account. I'd bet this is his final setup.

I'm really curious to watch how Plesko's SS setup influences his splits.  The top two guys are legit and there are still a few folks not far behind their wake but the clock isn't being kind to them.  Based on their current progress and forecast, it's going to be heroic for anyone to beat 5 days to Waterton let alone the sub 4 day target several of the folks were training hard for.  It's not for a lack of effort but Stefan's last two pictures make my heart sink when covering ground is your only objective!
Yeah, I've been speculating how the splits will be different too.  I expected Chris to go up Slumgullion faster than Jonathan, but they were pretty close, with Jonathan being a little faster even maybe.  They are on the La Garita detour, which should favor JB over Chris' singlespeed setup, so it probably will be an uneventful battle for the next several hours.

Overall, times are definitely slower than 2 years ago, weather is playing a big factor.

That's it. Minus a few PBJ sandwiches he shoved in his back pocket in the morning.

And what really blows my mind is he is riding packless!  Leanest setup is an understatement with Plesko!

I'm curious to see the gear list. Where does the food go? Warm clothes? Sleeping Bag? Bivy? It seems like there is room for just one of those things on that bike.

I guess you can't stop if you'll freeze! That is pretty crazy. pockets on shirt/jersey could carry food and rain jacket... Even the food some carry wouldn't fit in that. And that bike is fun but for the whole trail my back is starting to hurt.

Nice race out on the front!! Impressive work! What a great run to watch. lots of folks look to really be workin' it out there and pushing throughout the field.

It also looks like a handful of folks just came back down to Silverton (7pm ish), must be raining hard or something. Hopefully the evening brings calmer weather for those making the push out of Silverton tonight.
looks like flash floods are possible... grey and windy in Gunnison and dark in all directions. Brr.

I got the impression from him that he has no sleeping bag or even bivy sack!  Text book disaster style committed to doing everything he could to make his sub 4 plan!  I'll bet his HAB times are off the charts but I have no idea how he can survive the descents day after day without suspension.  I've never raced it with less than a 150mm travel fork and my hands were always one of my limiters.  Chris is cut from a special cloth to ride it in that style!

He's coming up on Fooses and in a few more hours will hit the Shavano TH split.  Typically this is the half way point time-wise but if conditions get better its possible for someone like him to get to the end in exactly 2 days from there.  Between there and Leadville I could see Jonathan close the gap and maybe takeover the lead in the faster rolling trails but the advantage might swing back to Chris in the steep mountains from Camp Hale to Hwy 9.  I'm excited to keep watching this unfold!

Yep, with decent weather and no significant mechanicals I am thinking they will finish in the 4 days/7-20 hour range, though I am hoping faster.  The weather is really turbulent up in the Camp Hale area right now, but they probably won't reach there until the early early morning hours tomorrow.

Trail conditions and weather the worst since first year of race IMO. That year was monsoon and rained all the time. This one may even beat that. Good luck all out there its great theater. I am glued to the screen or phone!
