Awesome job by Seth in these tough monsoon conditions.
I suspect living in Colorado and dealing with those conditions on a regular basis might be a big advantage over others in a race like this. I know it scared the cr@p outta me when I first moved to the Springs in 94, and I learned some lessons the hard way. But, you eventually learn to prepare and deal with it.

Curious how the earlier start affected weather. I did the CTR a few years ago and we started in August 1-I think-losing track of dates. It seems the monsoons are worse in July.
Nice job to everyone finishing and still out there! Getting mind/body/bike to work in water and mud is tough!

Justin, Max and Brad are all locked up in a battle for third and they all stopped at the Stagestop Saloon. If Dana bypasses the stagestop he could leapfrog them all.

YIKES....for all of those that are closing in on segments 2 and 1. As I look out of my balcony facing south towards Waterton. There are some serious clouds sitting right over waterton canyon and beyond.....

Race is still on for 3rd with 70 miles left.
Dana, Max and Justin are all on the same mile. Brad is showing 6 miles back, but that is a older update.
I wonder if they will ride through the night. Heck they may not even know that they a fighting for 3rd.
Makes for good viewing.

Why did Dana and Max just backtrack like 2 miles? And uphill no less? Must be some weird weather out there...that section has quite a few trees for shelter if I remember correctly, so not sure why they'd want to head back.

I just saw that too. per the radar overlay I do see a storm just a head of where they turned around, but not sure why they went back as far as they did. |

i live with about 5 miles from waterton. and the clouds were looking very very dark. some thunder and lightning. and not looking like there was a break anytime soon....tree cover yes indeed. especially if they are near wellington lake. but once they get across hwy 126 and start segment 2...the burn area has no cover for the first few miles......kind of a crap shoot- so close to finishing- but is it worth it!!! we shall see!! |

I was riding with Max Morris, Brad Ells, and Justin DuBois most of today. The first missed turn mentioned above was actually Justin. I saw that he missed the turn and then buried myself to catch him and let him know. At that time we were getting poured on with cold rain. Shortly after, bad weather got worse. All of us were soaked to the core and very cold. We were told by people in a car that the weather was going to keep up for 48 hours. We had serious concerns about out safety and well-being, so three of us decided to throw in the towel. It was a tough call to make, especially so close to the finish. It's easy to second guess our decision, but in that moment it seemed the best option given the potential for the weather to keep up, temperature to drop, and lack of ability to get warm and dry. Max, Brad, and I pedaled back up to the highway to try to get cell service. Justin made the call to press on. I'm a bit heartbroken, but there are lots of positives to take away.

But probably the right call, otherwise, you may have finished but damaged yourself so much you wouldn't be able to ride properly for a long time, or worse
I think you are setting a good example. By not damaging yourself or requiring an official rescue, you demonstrate how people in these unofficial/unauthorized races are not fools and irresponsible.
By saving yourself you should re-energize quickly and start planning your next adventure

Hi watching the race from Australia, seeing how my son John is travelling. Great to see it looks like he is riding with Chris_Kampsnider from Denver. John is rookie and first race in the US, and never done altitude before. Cant wait to see the photos when he finishes. Boy it looks tough . Best of luck to all the riders. 5 a.m. I sit at my computer 12 miles from waterton canyon and listen to the rain, it's a cold wet night for the racers near the end.
Justin Dubois looks like he's probably in a bivy on segment 3.
John Griffiths and Chris Kampsnider are still moving and are nearing the end of the Tarryall detour.
Stay stron fellas, finishing order is not set in stone, and neither is finishing at all this year.
